There's another name for you, skully:

Skull Pressure

Maybe that can be your compressor?

SKULL PRESSURE COMPRESSOR

I like the sound of that!

Been looking at different options for PCBs for this KLON build. There are legit 1:1 KLON boards on eBay for $30, was thinking about picking one of those up instead of madbean

The guy in the Frankenstein mask need to review every pedal ever made. I strangely find the reviews hilarious.
I was really was wondering which one is more versatile? I'm learning towards the East River Drive.

Well, I thought the Soul Food sounded good for a $60 pedal. It's not really close to the Klon circuit nor do I think it's really supposed to be. That's more of a marketing thing. Soul Food works pretty well as an overdrive, not so great as a clean boost. Haven't tried an East River Drive. (I'm waiting for them to release the "West Side Highway".)

Talk of Klons has caused me to necrobump this thread.

Currently borrowing a klone skully built using a MadBean Sunking II board.

Image

Sounds pretty nice.

It has three internal mini-toggle switches which so far seem incredibly subtle. (I only started messing with them today.) The one closest to the LED seems the most noticeable (barely). The first one is more noticeable with another dirt pedal stacked in front of it and the middle one doesn't seem to do much. Maybe skully can let us know which mods are which?

At some settings I prefer the Sunking to the ARC Klone I've got. I've also so far compared it to a silver bass Centaur. At low to mid gain settings the Centaur has more sparkle and presence. At higher gain the Sunking sounds a little bit better. I'm pretty impressed with the MadBean klone. Nice job, skully.

If anyone's at all interested, I can attempt to elaborate.

Clip changes the clipping diodes, thick increases the bass frequencies in the overdrive part of the circuit, fat makes shit fatter.
I'm guessing you'll notice them most with gain tapped out, and with a lot of volume.

I really like reading your thoughts on stuff that is unobtanium for many. :thumb:

Thanks, goroth. (Yeah, I love the Four Eyes.)

I tried flipping the toggles around at a bunch of different settings. (Including all knobs cranked.) Nothing seemed to make much difference. So, I couldn't really tell which toggle was supposed to do what. (skully didn't label 'em.) I'll keep fooling around with 'em and see/hear what I can come up with. Either way, it's a nice sounding klone.

As an interesting aside, the bass boost toggle on the ARC Klone only increases bass at certain settings. It's pretty finicky. So, same might go for this MadBean.

I don't have anything to add except that I finished my Madbean Kingslayer build recently (as opposed to the Sinking), and it is one hell of an overdrive. It will be on my board until I need to redo the mess that is my offboard wiring.

I don't think I'll build another, but so far my experience with a "Klon™" have been positive.

I haven't kept up with the state of klones. So, I don't know the difference between the Sunking and the Kingslayer. Madbean did a nice job with the Sunking though.

Glad to hear you like the Kingslayer you built. It really all depends on how you're using a klone and with what other gear. They don't work for everybody (... and some people don't know how to get the best out of 'em).

In my understanding, the Kingslayer is Madbean's spin on the Klon, it's designed to be more of an OD than a boost. I play mine with the gain pretty high and I love the way it sounds. I actually really like the buffer too.

It would be cool to compare it to a real Centaur, but I don't think they're intended to do the same things. Maybe I'll build a Sunking for my friend :excellent:

Yeah, I tend to use Centaurs/klones as more of a boost than an overdrive (always last in the chain). I do think they sound pretty good with the gain up though too. I just generally have no place for overdrives.

That Centaur in the photo above isn't really typical of the settings I usually use. I rarely crank the gain past noon. Oftentimes it's at about 9:00. Lately, a lot of times the gain is almost all the way off. Volume and tone are wherever. The klone in the photo is more typical of my usual settings. I'd say tone is most probably frequently closer to noon.

One of these days I'll try to bring the Klons & klones I've got to a fuzzy pow wow so everybody can play 'em. (Not that everybody'd want to.)

You should definitely build a SunKing for your friend. :snax:
