Don't bother unless selling either or it gets something other than dust on it. Occasionally dust when I rearrange the board but I haven't really done that in a year or so.

I have a maid but she is NOT allowed near guitars or gear.

Most of my guitars have dust under the strings on the pickguard too, or smudges on the chrome.

I just don't care as long as the neck is clean, it's not a biohazard, and move along.

Don't even get me started on the face on some of my rack gear, don't think I've EVER cleaned the front of a couple and I've had a couple of the delays for 20 years now.

Now on the other hand, my Space Echo...you could eat off of.

Every so many days I'll do a dust-off of the set-and-forgets.
The tweakers are more frequently cleaned, naturally.
I try to avoid harsh abrasives. If some gunk and grime need removing, diluted rubbing alc in distilled water, w/lint free cloth. Otherwise the damp cloth itself handles most pedals.

Microfiber cloth when they look ill...

They sound better when they're clean, that's why NPD's are always so epic...

Vintage pedals (especially pre-bankruptcy EHX) look better when they're dirty & beat up...but I clean the pots & jacks with deoxit every other year or as needed. Fuzz also sounds fuzzier when the enclosure gets fuzzy

I absolutely hate dirty pedals. Some pedals that I receive are super-grimy and the first thing after checking the function is that I disassemble them and clean every single part. Then I apply tuner spray in the old crackling potentiometers and clean the jacks with a trumpet mouthpiece brush and isopropyl alcohol.

After this procedure a pedal has the priviledge to become MY pedal.

i'm inclined to agree with this.
i'm pretty OCD and will often blow dust/hair etc. off of things but I hate that i'm OCD and try to keep it in check because there's a difference between being clean and impulsively wasting time polishing stuff that's just gonna be stepped on anyway
i clean stuff like my guitar fretboards because you don't wanna dry that shit out, and i always clean pedals before sending when i sell stuff because that's common courtesy, although i have no problem with receiving and cleaning dirty stuff.

I think this custom should be exported a bit more. Using a broom baffles me. I only wear shoes inside when I'm playing guitar (because I hate stepping on footswitches when I'm not wearing shoes) or constantly walking in and out (like loading gear or bringing the groceries in).

Yeah, it's weird. I've never been to a persons house who uses this practise but the idea definitely appeals to me. I was really surprised to hear then that some people DESPISE having to take off their shoes before entering. They find it really snooty or something?

thats so weird to me...? its just a common courtesy. i was raised to always ask if i should take my shoes off when entering a home, if they don't specify. nobody wants your mud tracked around their house (altho most of the time, ppls shoes are pretty clean).

the few times i've been reluctant to take my shoes off was cuz i knew my socks/feet were mad stinky. didn't want to subject ppl to that. i just explained it and made them laugh, and they were obv cool w/ me keeping my shoes on.

as for cleaning my pedals....rarely do i do that unless its really grimey when i receive the item, i might give it a good wipe. other than that. i prob clean my music making area once every couple months. that dust really piles up sometimes, and sometimes cleaning can give u a new perspective. fresh new beginnings ya feel me?

i find it strange that so many people here seem to play with shoes on even though the majority of boards have everything arranged close together
i love running around with socks on and composing tapdancing sequences into songs so shoes just totally get in the way of being precise
i equate it to like, if you play guitar enough to get finger calluses surely you can play pedals enough to do the same to your feet
