That sucks man. Glad to hear that the surgery went well though. My mom was actually born without the bones in her right thumb, only the skin and muscle, so they amputated it at birth. I'm glad that you're light hearted about it, and still able to play!

Out of morbid curiosity, have you been able to figure out what the finger got caught / cut / torn off on? Did it just somehow get hooked into some part of the railing, or what?

it got caught in the space between the gate and the railing (where the hinges are) along the side of the boat. it happened right as i was dropping into the water. there was no way to catch myself & my finger just ripped right off.

Holy fucking fuck. You have no idea how many times I've been paranoid about something almost exactly like that happening with doors on metal gates. ARGH.

I may never go near another chain link fence again.

yeah, i've learned that this is a relatively common way to lose a digit. so weird. i grew up on boats (i live right next to the mississippi). it was news to me.




as far as phantom pain goes, it's still a bit hard to tell what's "phantom" pain & what's residual pain from the healing process, but i do have the sensation that my finger is there. i'm not sure if it's psychological, or neurological. it's strange, though.
