Hi dudes and whatever lady is hanging out.
What's the easy-ish basic choice for a speaker supplement to a HDTV? Are the sound bar things any good? I have a nice Denon stereo that I used for my HDTV and PS3 but now it has to be put in another room, so I was wondering about a quick way I could get prrrrrrrreeettty good quality sound out of some extra speakers that wouldn't need like a separate amp or anything... the built-in speakers ain't great.
Anybody got the shit?

not sure if this is what youre looking for, but I use this logitech speaker/subwoofer combo for my computer, but it can also hook up to my TV for some great sounds at a very affordable price

trust me this thing gets loud, sometimes its too loud for my own good haha, and it just sounds great for the price. it's one of the lower models too, im sure if you splurged on one of the higher end models you'd definitely be getting bang for your buck. i love logitech

Ermm... sorry guys, neither of those are a good choice. The first one is a 2.1 system. TV is not good without a center channel. The second one is just a speaker, and needs an amp.
Get a sound bar. Prices vary with features. A simple one might run $75. For $150 - $200, you get a subwoofer, sometimes wireless. At around $250 you can often get wireless satellite speakers, for a full 5.1 setup. There are deals to be had if you aren't in a rush.
They connect easily, usually either optical or digital coax. They have remote controls. If you use bluetooth, you can get one with that as well.
Just make sure you get one that is narrower than your TV. They look odd when they are bigger than the TV.

I'd go to a local pawn shop and look at their surround systems. There are often great deals at the one near me. Pawn USA and other chain pawn shops have return polices and if you talk some talk a lil bit they can work with you on the price.
I've got a Yamaha surround system, it's pretty slick. Most any decent surround package set up well is pretty excellent. Although it can be hard work mounting and running cable and all that, the final product is worth the work. Having a surround receiver is pretty flexible as far as speaker placement, selection, and sounds are concerned. My receiver allows for independent volume control for each speaker/channel and has different modes for different signal routing.
A sound bar is a bit limiting, but are simple and look pretty good too. A friend of mine has the bose sound wave thing that goes under your TV, he is not a fan. I would not go with computer speakers.
Monoprice has some cool packages and just started selling receivers.
For me surround was and is a no brainer. If you watch a lot of movies it's worth it, especially if you buy blu-rays.

A big fan of sound bars. I have a Samsung with a wireless sub and love it.
Did the 5.1 wired thing and my cats would eat the wires (CATS = Creatures Aligned Totally with Satan). Moving into a rented house I didn't want the complication and hassle of of a 5.1 system (which I have in my man cave where no cats are allowed) so I put a sound bar and am very happy with it, especially considering the TV we purchased has craptacular speakers (good picture though) so we all all of our programming into the sound bar. Ours has HDMI through which I use on the rare occasion I pull out the projector, otherwise optical out from the TV to optical in on the sound bar.

What I have is just an LG 42" TV and a PS3, and I still have my digital optical cord that I ran with my Denon from the PS3, so I'll look for a good sound bar and sub combo that can do a digital optical in from the PS3. Wireless sub doesn't matter to me if it's cheaper with wire, but I'll look into both.
