Programs for chiptune?

I've been wanting to try my hand at making some chiptune music, and I wanted to know what programs are a good place to start. I currently have MilkyTracker and am learning that but are there other programs, possibly better programs I could be using? SCHOOL ME Y'ALL

i don't know much about tracker programs

plogue seems like jam VST tho it costs $$, there are a handful of free ones if u search google for chiptune plugin (more for PC, less for Mac)

can't go wrong w/ a gameboy either or even an emulator+rom (LSDJ or Nanoloop)
theres a DS tracker called Nitrotracker i think which i've heard is good

I have no clue what I'm talking about here but this apparently was made with Famitracker on a Famicom (Japanese NES), it's a .nsf (nintendo sound file):

It depends on how tr00 you want to be, some chiptune musicians shun everything that can't be actually mounted on to a consoled a played. Personally, I'm fine with the free eight bit vst synth and SID emulation I got from KVR audio, so that's good if you want to go that route.

Right now I mainly wanna use ask merging I can run on my laptop. At some point I wanna hack some machines to program but for now I want to have a program just to get some stuff out there. Purists be damned.
