I have a feeling my kid is gonna be music obsessed. He already shows huge interest in what I do and Moshes when I practice. He also got to play with the Idiot Box tour box (supervised) and loved the shit out of the rainbowtron. He's one gnarly little dude.

Dude! My kid loved the rainbowtron too! He played through my practice amp while I messed with the other stuff.

My kid is currently obsessed with Maps and Atlases. Its the only band he will listen to. And he knows how to open spotify, find the album, and play it. If I put on a live video he grabs the mic and starts dancing.

I think regardless of a parent's interests you should get your child involved in a sport of some sort, music/dance of some sort, and read a fuckload of books. That's like three activities and it covers a lot of territory. Even if they don't like football they might meet a kid who likes ice hockey (god forbid) and find that that's their bag. Or they'll hate the bunch of it and go nuts on the clarinet or something. It's a real challenge though letting your child get to know you, and your interests, while at the same time exposing them to stuff that they may like but you dislike. And books, because books.

I was pretty happy with my parenting a month or two ago - put on some Napalm Death and the oldest son (3) didn't want a bar of it and thought it was scary. Dunno where he got that from as I've listened to Napalm his whole life... anyways, put on the Code is Red and told him to listen as Barney would yell "ooooh". When I told him this I made a face and got him to copy it and make his own "ooooh" noise. When he started having fun with it I told him he had to say it more from the guts, and louder. Louder = moar better for children. So he was happy. Jammed the Code is red and at the first Ooooh he started laughing, then I told him when the next one was coming and he sang along haha.

We then listened to Celtic Frost to find more "oooh"s. Then we listened to some GNR - Mr Brownstone for the Yowzer! and Coma for the Goddamnit!
- he thinks its funny when I swear.

All in all it was a pretty good little metal/hard rock session.

If I had kids the only activity I'd try to push onto them is ju jitsu. Being able to defend themselves is important to me. I was bullied for most of my school life because my parents wouldn't let me defend myself. I wouldn't want that for my kids. It eventually made me crazy and very violent. The bullying stopped for some reason after that. So ju jitsu would be non negotiable. Other than that they can do what they like as long as it's constructive and positive. If they like music and art then its a bonus.

When I was a kiddo, my uncle gave me a guitar, an old old Fender starter.
My brother showed me how to do a few things on it.
(I learned to play Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana and some Green Day song)
That was enough for me to mess around with it on my own for a while.
Eventually I decided I wanted to take lessons.

I think a kid should have an instrument to mess with.
They will either end up wanting to explore it more or want nothing to do with it.

In fourth grade the music program started at my school for kids who wanted to be in Orchestra, band, or choir. I'd say a third of the people in my class tried it for a year or two and then quit. It's not for everyone. For me I started playing bass when I was 9 and still am. My younger brother started in band on clarinet and really didn't like it and quit after 3 years. Although he now plays steel drums and the hammered dulcimer. My parents were and are very supportive. My mom drives my brother about 40 minutes downtown for lessons and after eight years had "rented to own" me a Double bass ($2000).

On the other hand I played baseball for 7 years and then stopped and my parents supported that too. They saw I wasn't enjoying it anymore, I also thought I was smarter than most of my coaches and let them know it, so it was best.

If your kid wants to try something you should let them at least try, the worst thing that happens is that they learn that they don't like whatever it is. I tried soccer once, never again.

Wanted to pick up a guitar since I was 5, my parents never nurtured that so I ended up picking up my first one at 38 years old. My daughter was already a teenager then and I tried to get her interested but she would have no none of it.
