i've played them and not really been into them, but the Dinger has given me really specific tastes for how a bass should feel.

I tend to play my bass' high, and playing a ric in MY comfort zone was just about the worst thing ever. It wasn't vintage, but probably late nineties by its wear. The tone was its own thing, but also not my thing. I dig Yes and Rush and prog, but I would never drop rick cash on an instrument that I had to change my posture and playing to get around on.

Hoy - Sounds boss. Wish I could listen to it on my speakers rather than headphones. I'll bet it's beastly live too.

That may very well be a large part of our difference in opinion then. Like I said before, I'm a pick player, and as such I wear my bass quite low. That makes the Ric a lot more comfortable.

So my covers band, which has always been strictly covers, has me in a conundrum now. Our guitarist, who is insanely talented, has a couple originals he wants us to try out. The other two band members are enthusiastically in favor of this. I have two main reservations:

1.) We're a cover band, that's what bars hire us for, that's what crowds want to hear. My experience in the past is that if people are there to see a cover band, originals (and obscure covers, for that matter) result in a lot of looking around, talking, and looking at their phones.

2.) I've heard snippets of the songs, and while they're good, they're a totally different style from music I like, they don't have basslines written yet, which means I'll have to write them, and the guitar lines are so fucking busy that there's not much room for the bass to breathe, which means I'll basically just be playing root notes like a fucking chump. I hate that style of bassline, I hate hearing it and I hate playing it. It's fucking boring. If I start trying to change the whole feel of the song, I'll probably look like the asshole.

That's a tough one, man. Having been in a cover band that tried to interject originals (many ages ago), I totally agree about when cover bands add originals to their set. I do like it when cover bands elaborate on their covers (well, sometimes - I'm a picky bastid) as long as as it doesn't involve doing reggae versions (sorry - personal preference raising its ugly head there), but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

And if the songs are different enough from what you play genre-wise, that's a real killer.

How about suggesting politely that you guys just start an occasional originals gig? As for the basslines, could you play simple lines that do interesting things with the intervals? Or fuzz them out?

The songs aren't really all that different from a lot of our originals. They're pretty standard metal, just not the kind of music I have any interest in writing.

Nah, they're wayy to fast and busy guitar-wise for me to play any sort of fuzz or distortion on the bass, I'd just get drowned out.

That was a pretty cool video MuddyBuddy. I love Ring Mod and Phasers. I bet it would sound great with a cheapie drum machine too. I have a TC Fireworx for a my FSU type effects right now. I have played through it some but haven't gotten deep since I am mostly focus on finishing my studio/jam space (so close!).

S0, have any of guys ever messed with a MIJ Boss CS-2? I have never owned a compressor before but someone here offered me one as a trade. I saw the price they go for on TB and said sure. I checked the video of Juan Alderete proclaiming it to be the most important pedal in his rig and him showing how much harmonics it adds to his highs, I was like hmmmm. So, I tried it out yesterday and DAMN it really does just make the highs jump out more, in a very nice way. I just turn the attack up so it doesn't actually compress and crank the sustain. I think Behndy could make good use of this pedal with all of the tapping he does.

I've never used the CS-2, but I've played the CS-3 before and thought it was a pretty damned good comp. The controls are different on my current comp though (MXR bass comp). Turning the attack all the way up makes it clamp down on your signal immediately, where as all the way down still lets your big transients sneak through before it starts compressing.
