this just came in the mail. '86 MIJ Ibanez Roadstar II

got a great deal and I couldn't be fucking happier. Started in a band this year on a cheap shitty active Schecter that's as dead as they get. Longed for a P-bass for a long time... Now I landed this baby - although I took a leap and had it shipped to me, the moment I plugged it in, I knew it was a great choice

It's so vibrant. Every tone just jumps out of the bass wild as fuck. Great action, could use new frets soon, but man... this bass is a ROCK MACHINE

I really dig the color scheme. Was it pretty affordable? Might stay on the lookout for one even though I just got my Sterling Ray4 last week

Congrats, that's a really rad bass. I love MIJ guitars & basses. You can usually score a Roadstar II in the US for about $250 - $500, the ones with the "hair metal" headstocks are even cheaper.

been playing the whole evening... will take me some time to get used to the more traditionally p-bass neck (it's not huge, but it is wider), but otherwise I'm having a great time

I first started on a Squier P-Bass, it's a good decade old, maybe more.

Then I moved to an Ibanez cheapo GSR, completely different feel.

Whilst technically the GSR is easier to play, I still find myself picking up my clumsy elephant of a P-Bass. Just that tone and feel! Glorious.

Funny, because the Schecter had a very modern Ibanez-y feel and size. So you can imagine the difference Still... I'm really happy with how this turned out, because this is the sort of bass I was looking for - lively, agressive and solid as fuck

If nothing else, P-Basses are god damn solid

Plus I've played numerous other basses (Jazz Basses, musicmans, warwicks, pedulla, zon, etc) and for whatever reason nothing comes close to the low end thump you get when you turn the tone control fully round.


The subby sound you get is immense, ideal for when I'm playing dub or reggae, but also really swish for just general low end. I've done some recording in the past where I've layered the bass, one part being whatever I want the bass to sound like, and then the P-Bass with tone control fully on for some subbage behind it.
