New Orleans recommendations!?

Post by doommeow »

I'm flying down to NOLA for a few days - anyone have any ILF-friendly recommendations?

This isn't my first trip and have done and seen a fair amount:
- Cafe Du Monde
- Rebirth
- Kermit and the BBQ @ Vaughn's
- Jazz Brunch
- Coop's Place
- Cochon (?! the place with the adjoining butcher/sandwich shop and the great moonshine menu)
- The Hall.
- Spotted Cat and various other spots on Frenchmen Street

What else should a visiting ILF'r do/see/lookfor? Good guitar shops? Noise/drone/esoteric-friendly records stores? Any bands outside of the trad jazz scene worth trying to catch? I know there's a strong metal scene, but that's not really my bag.....

Whatcha got, NOLA?

here's one, and you better take this seriously, if you're into vinyl and record stores and want to go to one of the coolest record stores in the country, check out domino sound. it's so fucking killer for so many genres. if you like music at all and have a record player you will find so many gems there. you'll thank me for that one. also, i haven't been to this but my friend who is in the band thou is involved in a place called the iron rail book collective and it seems really cool. he sells records from his distro out of that space. general DIY kind of stuff, though mostly leaning towards underground metal and punk. good stuff though, not like what you'd find under those headings at most other record stores. and it's apparently a cool book store with an underground/DIY kind of focus.

i also recommend buying coke from a sketchy dude and doing key bumps with your friends in gross bathrooms late at night and drinking really heavily. that's not totally my scene, but new orleans is the place to do it. although i guess if you're into that at all you've probably already done it there if you've been there before.

Iron Rail sounds right up my alley - but it looks like they're out of business...
