The web host suspended ILF last night for exceeding bandwidth quotas and shit. We've been hitting their facebook and twitter all morning.

Most likely not bandwidth. Bandwidth is cheap. CPU time, on the other hand, is not, and that is where forums and shared hosting aren't a good match.

Tom-- I speak from experience. Look into a VPS. That, or a dedicated server, is the only hosting that I think would be a good fit. Dedicated server will be too expensive, so VPS is where ILF needs to be. That is kind of a hybrid of shared hosting and a dedicated server. You get a virtual server that is completely independent of the other accounts on the same server. You get a guaranteed amount of RAM, bandwidth, and disk space. You get a guaranteed share of the total CPU, and compete for idle cycles with other VPS accounts on the same server. The more you pay, the more CPU you can use. If you push against the CPU limit, your site gets slow, but you don't get suspended.

I would never do business with Eleven2.com (and I have been paying for hosting since 2002 for my forum). Unless I was doing something illegal, I expect any company that offers hosting to provide me with advanced notice if I push up against my limits, and to explain my options so I could avoid being turned off. Anything short of that and I would take my business elsewhere, and tell everyone why. Think about it-- instead of the common sense approach of giving a loyal customer an opportunity to pay more money, they chose instead to basically tell you to take your dollars elsewhere. How would that work for the long term success of your business?

If you go with VPS hosting, do your research. You want managed hosting, unless you are a competent server admin. I use Knownhost. They are considered one of the best, but I think they're just okay. Another big player is Future Hosting. I would estimate that you're looking at $40 - $60/month for a site this size.
