I'm with ya there. I've never been hugely genre conscious. As far as I'm concerned music fits into two categories.
Music I like,
Music I don't like.
I mean I'm not completely ignorant, and things like crabcore i'm aware of and can use to filter anything in that group directly into the "don't like" category.
Those are my genres too

There are too many funny comments in this thread to quote all at once

I am liking all the Hum and Brand New love here. I used to really like BN's old albums, before "The Devil and God" and "Daisy" came out. What I liked was that in those albums Jesse never sounds whiny, more like a dude just singing about whatever. His screams are are as fuck, too. And if you really listen to the lyrics on those albums, they're not all about "boo, hoo, I'm a whiny bitch" or whatever. I did read Tom Dalton's interview where he said that he sent an extra pedal and never got a thank you or reply, so that was lame  But I really like those two albums. The Devil and God has some great sounds and noise in it.

Y'all forgot about a band called Planes Mistaken For Stars. They always get lumped into emo. I don't really care what you call them, though. A friend of mine once said about them "they cut all the fat off the lyrics." Dudes were not pretentious, once were mistaken for homeless bums by a friend of mine before he knew who they were. And no one really sounds like them (At least to me.) They're last album was garbage, though. There were only two original members left at that point. Anyways, I still credit them as one of the bands that made me want to play music when I was younger.

Oh wow, yeah I hadn't thought about Planes Mistaken for Stars in a couple years. Really awesome stuff, but the "emo" tag never made sense to me. Those guys rocked HARD. I missed their last tour but my buddy went and he STILL talks about that show.

I've never been into much emo, but Coheed's Good Apollo was awesome. It's at least fairly emo-ish. Progressive emo alternative rock let's say.

jfrey, I got your back. I haven't jammed Coheed in a little while, but I was huge fan back around then. Dunno if I'd classify it as emo, though, being that it's a sci-fi epic :idk:

Idk. I think stylistically it fits in with emo. I listened to it again today for old times sake. It's still a good album.

Or a post rock.

I was majorly disappointed in that album after really liking

"Second Stage Turbine Blade."
