In college I worked summers at a microfilm publisher. This was back when film was still dominant. We used to spin a charged drum in the circulatory system the developer was pumping through. Every few months we'd take about 30-50 pounds of silver off of it.

I worked at a one-hour photo lab in college. Same thing there. The silver halides that were removed during development would collect on some kind of aggregator doohickey. It would get scrapped once a month and sold.

I deliver pizza for Dominos. Most of my coworkers are cool, I love driving, I get to eat free pizza a lot of the time and the money is decent. I hate being part of a GIANT company though. I also rack up a lot of miles on my car and I feel weird being so intertwined with car culture.

In the future I'd like to do work for a company that is not profit driven. I'd like to do something that feels good hehe

Isn't burning garbage super dirty?

Sure. That's why we use bad-ass high-tech filtration on the back end. There is a 24/7 active monitoring system on the output of those plants. If anything goes out of spec, the operators know immediately. We are also frequently randomly inspected by state DEP. All of the emission testing reports are public record. No system is perfect, but ours is exceptionally well executed and all of the records are available for public review (and they are reviewed, I assure you).

The upside to burning garbage is that there is a ~90% reduction in volume, steam and electricity are produced and reused, and shit-tons (literally) of metals are recycled. The downside is that the guys who run landfills don't make nearly as much money, which is hardly a downside in my view. Another plus is that the GHG emissions from burning one ton of garbage is less than the emissions from the methane that the same ton of garbage would emit in a landfill.

As for me i sling tie-dye and other bohemian memorabilia from a roadside stand on a major highway in northern california.
It's pretty damn sweet. Meet a lot of cool people, don't have to try very hard to sell. You're either interested or you don't stop in.
It's cool too because it's like a semi-permanent tent and every morning I set up and hang different colorful tapestries etc. That part's fun.
In between set-up and tear down i'm just waiting for customers, it gives me a lot of time to dick around on the internet and play some bass.

i'm also right up the street from this cool solar/sustainability permaculture place that does classes, been volunteering a bit there to get into energy.
i got a physics degree i'm just sitting on due to the fact that i wasn't really feeling grad school and just wanted to hang out and do 'regular adult life' for a while.

It brings in vastly more money than it pays out (obviously, otherwise the governments wouldn't bother). It's not a scam, because they'll tell you the actual odds in the fine print, if you care enough to go looking for it, but they certainly don't advertise it. And the lottery is almost exclusively played by the lower and lower-middle classes, who by and large have far less education than the upper classes, and thus don't know or care about statistics and odds. And that's also the segment of society that can least afford to throw their money away on a pipe dream of riches. But, it is what it is.

ouch. all that makes a bunch of sense. what if instead of a lottery we had lower and lower middle classes put a couple bucks each into funding something that benefits the lower and lower middle class as a collective whole? instead of giving some random person a bunch of money haha.

Right -- I think people tend to look at it as a 50/50 split, either you win or you don't.

My math teacher in like 7th or 8th grade's little idiom was that the lottery was a tax for people who are bad at math.
