I actually forgot to mention the Electro Harmonix Micro Synth which is probably my favourite for swells because it doesn't need this silence / mute in between.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, the BMS has a kick-ass attack swell. Jrmz, if you want to try it out, you can borrow it anytime.

Thanks mang, but I've got an old big-box one (that's been modded for true bypass and for the LED to show activation instead of just power-on). It is awesome, but too big for my needs - I need the smallest, simplest volume swell-only kinda thing.

Every swell is identical to the previous
Depending on your point of view that could be a good or a bad thing, but I think for consistency I'd prefer to have a preset envelope control my volume.

The ones I've had were good for pick responsive vol. swells, not unlike a good optical compressor...

I am extremely uncoordinated, and don't trust myself with most wah/treadle interfaces. The end result is usually bad.

• response time faster than possible with a foot
• ability to use your foot to control other effects
• consistency of the swell

Last night I played a gig and used it quite often, and it gives you a lot of freedom. You can interact with the audience, move around, do stuff on stage, without being tethered to a pedal. In many cases I find I prefer envelope controlled effects to manually controlled effects.

The ones I owne(d):

DL4: Needs a compressor in front to really nail what I'm after, and I guess a big ass delay modeler doesn't really count here.
BYOC: sounded like a pretty accurate SG1 as far as I could tell. Finnicky to dial in, not super easy to use on long gradually swelling slow notes.
Pigtronix Attack/Sustain: Horrible at sustaining notes. As in, it totally didnt, at all. Notes would just cut out after a couple secs or so, which, for me, made the pedal just a huge pricey compressor with a ton of useless bells and whistles.

If it weren't so big and packed with features I don't really care for, I'd personally go with the EHX Pog2. Best souding swell effect I heard, as far as I can tell from the online demos.

I was guessing the slow engine is an SG-1 clone, but the current draw on it is 128mA. Must be digital?

Yeah, I think the Slow Engine is a digital simulation rather than a clone.
