Meh, I'm the oldest guy in my band and it doesn't effect how we play. And the gap ain't too cray, so who cares? As long as your not a dick and are serious when it comes to band stuff I won't care.

Play with him, refer to him only as 'boy' or 'son' and never by name, interrupt songs to tell him stories about "back in my day", and describe everything he does as precious or adorable.

This is pretty solid advice here, son.

I was recently playing with a friend of mine who is 6 years younger than I am.

It's generally just about how people carry themselves.

I don't expect everybody to make perfectly rationally and mature decisions 100% of the time, myself included. On the other hand, I'm not interested in somebody who is completely lacking in maturity. If you're 19-20 or whatever and you can't relate to somebody who is approximately 10 years older than you then you've probably got some fucking issues. Stick to community college and hanging out at high school parties until you're 35, I don't give a fuck.

I can hang with some young-ins no problem. But I treat them like I'd treat anybody. I demand a certain level of maturity and respect. You come to be a certain age (TBD) and you no longer feel like wasting your time with somebody else's baggage. If you're 19 and act 16 then you can go play with your 16 year old friends and make fart sounds with your armpit. If you're 19 and you act like one of the guys then come on in, have a beer (don't tell your mom) and make some fucking armpit noises with us guys.

Also, I keep reading the thread title as "Ape gaps".

So, you're in a band with a chimp, an orang-utan and a silverback?

The most important thing between bandmates is that you each have similar expectations/goals. If someone wants to be a musician, and another just wants to have fun playing music... you're going conflict. One of the first things I do after jamming with people two or three times and we are creating something worth talking about... is to well... talk about it! What are everyone's intentions with this? Do we take it further? etc.

I say jam with the dude, if it goes good, take it from there. If nothing great happens, talk about it, be honest, and move on.
You make it sound like a romantic relationship :p Age doesn't matter as long as they can play and be able to get into the venues you're playing at (ran into that problem before).
 Too much talking, not enough fuzz?
A band is essentially an interpersonal relationship. I've seen a lot of people get butt hurt over band drama. Musicians are the worst at saving face. From my experience the best thing to do is to lay your cards on the table and cut through the bullshit.

Essentially this tho:

Mick Mars was like 16 years older than the rest of Motley Crüe and they did okay.
