I'm not really sure what's going on in this thread anymore, but back to my ramblin' review:

I bought a new 9V battery today and we're good to go.

Tried the Soul Food, the Zombie Klone and the Centaur into a little 5W Airline.

The sounds I continue getting seem to confirm my first impressions. Soul Food compresses the signal more, is more saturated and has more of a mid range bump than either the Klon or the Klone. Klon & Klone are more open, have better clarity and more sparkle. Again, who knows what the buffer on the Soul Food sounds like, I still can't bust that shit open. None of the pedals sound bad. They each have their favored uses. The Zombie Klone is brighter than either of the other pedals, which sometimes help it cut through when running a fuzz before it. (I've been using the Wren & Cuff White Elk I just got from HorseyBoy.) I'll start testing with other fuzzes and with swapping the order of the pedals around, but for how I use a Klon, it seems the closer sounding to an actual Klon circuit, the better.

Oh, another thing I wanted to say is that JHS Pedals offers a mod to the Soul Food. I was thinking while I was playing that a mid cut control would be very helpful in making the pedal more useful. I checked, they don't do that. They do a bass contour, which is probably helpful too, but I think a mid cut would be better.

Apart from the odd attempt to derail this thread hard, I really like the "info" in here. Keep the thoughts coming Chanks.
That Fredric dude posts (posted?) on some other forum. Shortscale? I can't remember. He should so post here and add to the enlightenment.

They're not derails, they're enhancing vignettes.

Agree. You can just call me "info" from now on and call goroth "enhancing vignette".

Well, because of this thread, I think I've switched back to a 1.5mm pick.

Not that that really has anything to do with these pedals, but ... :idk:

Backplate still don't wanna come off.

Tried the Soul Food first in chain. It sounds fine before the White Elk both as a clean boost and more overdriven. Probably a little better as an overdrive in that placement, but could work as either. This is still into the Airline. Not much more than that to report right now. :idk:

Have you tried blunt force trauma?

Well, I didn't purchase the pedal myself and I wouldn't wanna damage it either way. So, no. No blunt force trauma.

I'm not really that concerned. I can imagine the way it sounds buffered instead of true bypass. I'm sure buffered it'll add a little chime to it. I think I'm getting a pretty good impression of the Soul Food with it in true bypass though. I think it sounds good enough for a $60 pedal. Probably more than good enough for most people. The only thing that really bothers me about it is the cheap construction. (As partly evidenced by the fact that I can't even remove the bottom plate.) It probably wouldn't last long seeing real stage use. I'd rather spend twice the price on a better quality pedal and not have to worry as much about replacing it when it fails.

I think this compression you speak of and extra distortion is coming from the gain bump up and silicon diodes, perhaps schottky (lower fV like germanium but no where near the same sound).

Never had an issue opening an EHX box... but I have good screwdrivers, I don't count that as a build quality issue  and it would be lighter, the box is cheaper diecast aluminium (don't mean it's going to break) the PCB is smaller and using SMD parts and the hardware is smaller/lighter, knob turning 'feel' is no indication of quality either, yeah it's mass produced but it's not going to shatter if you drop it.

Buffer is going to add clarity, probably something you find lacking, if you put the klon first for all testing it should make up for it being off some.

Thanks, Scruffie. Yeah, it's not the same circuit. So, I'm sure EHX designed it to be a little more versatile than a straight up Klone.

The screws being a build quality issue? Yeah, not really. I was just speculating wildly. Not knocking mass production either. It is what it is. Your assessment of the build is accurate. It's gonna be no less dependable than many other mass produced pedals. It just feels cheap, which it what it is. It still sounds fine.

I haven't gotten around to sticking a buffered pedal before it, but I will.

A couple drops of this and it'll loosen up. I would not spray it on the pedal, spray some into a container and then just add a drop to each screw.

If the penetrating oil (TWSS) doesn't work just bring it into a hardware store and tell a clerk you're looking for the right screwdriver to get the back plate off. Once he gets the screws out thank him and leave.

I know they're philips head screws but the right flat head can work well on the EHX screws too.
