Of, for, and about TEACHERS!

Post by jasonmitsch »

Are any of you fuzzbreaux teachers/educators? Or have an awesome teacher story to share?

I've taught bass and guitar lessons since 2007. Received my PA teaching certificate in music in 2012. I'd been subbing sporadically since then, but I was recently placed as a longterm music sub in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. It's definitely the most challenging thing I've ever attempted.

So share your horror/glory stories!

I've been teaching autistic children for 3 years now. Everyday is an adventure. Isn't my career. Job is entry. I couldnt be a teacher for life. I applaud anyone who aspires to do so though. So under paid and so important.

Not a teacher, nor do I plan to be one.
But I just wanted to say teachers are super rad.
I'll never forget all the amazing teachers I've had over the years that have inspired me in some way or another.
Keep on teachin' on, teachers.

Was going for music ed till the past semester. Really don't want to ever have to deal with a public learning institution.

I do give bass lessons though.

In my late 20's I taught at an art school. Best moment teaching ever was when I told all of my freshman that I didn't care about what ever personal drama they thought they had suffered through, that I wanted them to start telling stories, lying and cheating and start entertaining me…their art when from yawnsville to fucking amazing…making people cry in crit, even while kind of funny in some ways, always made me feel like a piece of shit.

Unfortunately more money working retail than being a college professor who taught 4 classes a week.

Hooray for teachers! I'm not and am certainly not headed in that direction, but a lot of my immediate family are teachers/educators.

Solidarity.

Couldn't agree with this more.

I wouldn't be where I am now without the teachers who inspired me.

I have a few teacher friends and my little sister is training to teach primary, and hearing their stories I don't envy them one bit. Shitty kids, worse parents, a society that holds them in contempt when they do one of the most important jobs there is? Nah. It's outrageous how little respect people have for (good) teachers.

This is my life right now. I'm replacing a teacher who decided to retire mid year because the students were just so bad. Absolutely out of control. She didn't have the consistency to establish any classroom management.

Now they associate music class with chaos and I'm struggling to reprogram them, even though I only see them once every six school days. It's a losing battle.

There are so many other factors to consider though. It's a lower income area, so these kids have it a lot worse than I do. If my biggest worry is having to constantly raise my voice to get their attention, their biggest worry is will they eat something other than a shitty school lunch that day.

Yup…you have no idea how hard college professors have it…there's a few cherry gigs out there, and every one is tooth and nail after any kind of climbing. Unfortunately, really not a place to be super ambitious, as academia has to be the slowest moving culture/organization I've ever been a part of.

Now I work in the design industry, which has it's ups and downs, but autonomy, creativity and relatively large range of freedom = good. Still miss teaching though.

I'm in my third year of teaching, all in the lowest performing school district (501 out of 501) in PA, in the second most dangerous city in the country (according to FBI), and in 5th grade. Taking over this far into the year is gonna be nightmarish, but it's worth sticking it out if you know it's what you wanna do. We have a very high turnover rate; I've seen teachers have to take over in similar situations and it is possible to turn it around, but it takes a lot...

Kudos to all of you. Reading through this shows just how broken our education system is and how screwed up our priorities are. Thanks for what you do.
