anybody know of any good books about this junk? I didn't take auto in high school; well, I didn't really take anything as I never showed up

what are you looking for specifically? an overview, or trying to fix somethin? i always used the Clymers manual for whatever crappy bike i had at the time. pretty good step by steps with pics and diagrams from stuff like maintenance to rebuilds.
