i just know vinyl mastering was included in our 7" deal. don't think it was a massive additional expense. & can always just record the vinyl after that to burn to CD if you're doing that yourself.

Re: small run vinyl pressings?
yeah. i mean, i love the idea of anything i've made sounding the best possible on whatever media it's on... but these are probably just keepsakes. i know I'LL never play it, my drummer is just geeked to have an actual RECORD of stuff we've done. i think.... there's a bunch of signed Tool records he wants to hang it amongst? silly bugger.D.o.S. wrote:Right. Vinyl mastering depends on the engineer--that's all over the place, kind of like normal mastering stuff.
If you're doing something like a Meep thing for friends and family, you probably don't need it ( I just read the rest of the thread 'cause I'm spaced today), but definitely try a test pressing out to see if anything sounds really fucking awful before you get in too deep.
yur. we're actually decently happy with it now, but did spend a chunk of money and time on this so were gonna splurge to have it mastered. but it's all ret to go almost for dl'd stuff and to print some cd's of, and if mastering is way different towards vinyl than for digital our limited budget would be better spent towards merch than having it mastered a different way? for something that will be just a personal sized run?space6oy wrote:i just know vinyl mastering was included in our 7" deal. don't think it was a massive additional expense. & can always just record the vinyl after that to burn to CD if you're doing that yourself.

Re: small run vinyl pressings?
i just meant that's a way to not have to pay for two separate masterings. do the vinyl one out of necessity and then record that and burn it. don't think the CD/mp3 will sound much different from the record then... but i'm no pro.

Re: small run vinyl pressings?
lol. meeeeee neither. there's a mastering house that Massy And Company recommended, we're most likely goig to go with them.
but there will be conversations before action, so that's something really good to know to ask. if the mastering for digital is going to sound horrible on vinyl?
ugh. I WANT TO BE A ROKKSTAR SO I CAN HAVE PEOOOOOPLE. PEOPLE THAT DO THESE THINGS FOR ME.
and then steal all the rights and revenue because i'm being a git and just watching them do what they doooooooo.
GIMME. WHERE IS MY JUSTIFIED DOWNWARD SPIRAL STREWN WITH WHORES AND HER'RON.

Re: small run vinyl pressings?
Dibs on being the swindling manager.
Anyway, the two big things about vinyl are that it really doesn't like a lot of high end--think hi-hats, sibilance, etc. and it doesn't tend to play kindly with anything below 40hz. Part of the reason why so many people think vinyl sounds "warmer" or "more analog" is because of the high-end roll off and the absence of mix-munching sub frequencies (which is not to say that bass can't sound absolutely supermassive on wax). Those are things that you don't have to worry about with CDs and digital, so people... don't worry about them.
Best thing for what you're doing would probably be to ask "hey, can you guys master this in such a way that if we wanted to press a couple vanity LP's for friends and family it won't sound like complete garbage?"

The dude from People In A Position to Know Records does lathe cut stuff for a living. He did a few cuts for this band Amo Joy I saw a while back that were cut into plastic picnic plates, and it sounded pretty neat. His prices are waaay reasonable, but he's not taking any orders due to a huge backlog.

Re: small run vinyl pressings?
He fucking does. He put out a 9" square lathe cut release for my band New Science Projects a while back. Each one had different art that was handmade by my friend/main guy in NSP Dale. I know someone who sold one recently for $30. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THINGS SOMETIMES.Achtane wrote:This guy sounds like a dude who knows what's up.theavondon wrote:The dude from People In A Position to Know Records does lathe cut stuff for a living. He also did a (successful) Kickstarter to put out a double LP Kris Kristofferson cover album (also starring NSP and Amo Joy), and he even paid KK the rights to each song on every copy, and gave each band four of them. Fucking, great guy.
