I had a friend with an 99 A6 that was frankly......crap, leaked and burned oil at 120ish thousand miles at a very high rate and lots of odd stuff happened to it like the rain gutters popped out of the roof and couldnt be put backblindrabbit wrote:IMO, can't go wrong with an older Audi. Prices on used ones are relatively depressed for unknown reasons, so you can usually get fantastic deals on great cars that don't have the rep they deserve for how reliable and generally excellent they are.

Same here. Can't go wrong with a Subie. Maybe a base-model Impreza or a Forester (based on Impreza chassis) if you want to go a little lighter on the wallet? Fantastic cars.Decibill wrote:Two time WRX owner here. Lovely cars.

Foresters can haul lots o'gear too and the XT's are total sleepers....That said I prefer the WRX wagon.DuoSonicII wrote:Same here. Can't go wrong with a Subie. I have a Forester. It's awesome. It doesn't quite get 25MPG though.

All my VW and Audis, and those of everyone I know, have been rock solid reliable and pretty much bulletproof. Now, while I know people that have had great experiences with Subies, the two that I had were both POS. They did weird things like blasted flames out their tailpipes, and after breaking the bank trying to keep the second one going I finally sold it for a huge loss and decided to never go back. That's when I got into Toyotas for a long time - which I'll recommend any and all of without hesitation too.
Anyway, I think it's cool that people have had good Subie experiences and my intent wasn't to talk bad about them. I just wanted to get in a vote for Audis, since they've been nothing but awesome for me, my family, and friends.

SUBIE WUBIE WUBIE!
I learned to drive on my moms outback, which is like the cheapest version of the Impreza. Also it was the year that had the adorable headlights. Its great for living halfway up a mountain in constant rain.

I believe the outback is a legacy unless its a outback sport in which case its based off the Impreza, i could be wrong though.

Its all good, i want to hear all sorts of experiences. Some people swear by Yugos and have had great luck with them, hell i just saw a Yugo the other day that someone had added a massive rice burner exhaust system and some expensive looking wheels.

I have an '07 Mercury Milan AWD, which I am completely happy with. It's the same exact car as the Ford Fusion, just slightly different body-work. It's a bit bigger than the Subaru, and the gas mileage isn't quite as good as you're looking for (I usually get around 24mpg or so). But it kicks ass in the snow and has a gigantic trunk which is awesome for hauling my basses and pedalboards and shit.

It is an outback sport. Its definitely not a stationwagon.
Fun to drive in the snow too.
