Super zoom

Post by Warpsmasher »

So I've moved into an 18th floor apartment with a crazy long view of the whole city. I could just get a telescope, but I want to be able to take pics. I'm looking for a far-reaching super telephoto lens, like, something that can focus in from a mile or two away. Is there such a thing, and if so, can it be had for under ten thousand dollars? I'm currently without a DSLR, but will probably choose a brand depending on the best compatible lens. I've seen some noname brand aftermarket ones on ebay for under $300 but I'm skeptical.

Did a little more homework, and it looks like a non-dslr with 50x optical zoom is a far better option.

Canon SX50 HS: Can be had for around $400. Covers the range of about 4 DSLR lenses, and shoots RAW too.

Twelve. Miles.

Top competitor is the Sony DSC-HX300. Same zoom range, but no RAW option. 20MP vs. the Canon's 12, and 60 fps video vs. Canon's 24. I do love Sony's image quality, especially on video. It's a tough choice...

Whatever you choose, make sure you get a nice tripod and remote.

I have a decent tripod already. Looks like the Sony remote has a lot more functions than the Canon.

Here!

Go through those. It's sorted by the ones with the longest focal length (so all of those zoom in to the same level, but not necessarily out as far).

It's pretty nuts that this level of spy tech is available to the common consumer now.

Serious creep factor...
