So now I'm on the hunt for an inexpensive and hopefully decent replacement.
I did plug it in last night and play it a bit with just the neck pickup and it sounded pretty good!
I responded in DR but I figured I'd post here too for any one interested. If you want cheap and good pickups for a seven string some of the stock ibanez 7 string pickups are AWESOME. I have a set in each of my dearmonds and love em with a total cost of like 20-25$ shipped from eBay.
Actually come to think of it I have an extra ibby blaze 7 string pickup if you want it but its designed for hard mounting (bolt to body) not pickup ring mounting.

I still have the Duncan Designed pickups I pulled from my Jazz-7 when the BKPs went in, which *are* set up for pickup ring mounting. PM me if that's of interest. They're not doing me any good currently.

I love Ibanez guitars, along with Suhr and a few others, because they like to use body-mounted pickups. I think it looks awesome.
I really should have checked here before Ebay this morning. I grabbed a BC rich pup for cheapy cheap. If anyone ends up purchasing this I'd be glad to put the pups of choice in if you sent them to me.
I had hoped to have some final assembled pics and a demo of it today but now I'm waiting on the bridge pickup to get here.
It did play quite well using just the neck pup.

How's this coming along? Or is it just too damn cold to work on it? =)

I've gotten a little side tracked. Right now all it needs is the new pickup installed and then it should be done. The BC RIch pup I got is a bit to big for the route so I will need to mod it, as well as the pickup ring so that it will work. Not particularly ideal but it will work. I'll try to get it finished today.

I've heard a rumor that the route on this kit is actually sized for a 6-string pickup. Does that accord with your experience?

let me go measure it. I would have been much happier with the kit if it came unrouted and not drilled for the bridge.

Confirmed. It's the same route size that I have on a six string that's somewhat dismanted.

Interesting. Theoretically, one could put in a non-polepiece 6-string pickup - for example, one of the sludge/stoner/doom-approved Lace models (Drop & Gain, Nitro Hemi, Dirty Heshers, etc.) that aren't currently available for 7s - and rock the fuck out.

First I had to remove some wood to make room for the normal sized 7 string pickup.
Get it in there and wired up.
Time to call it done. All that's left is putting the Strap anchors on.
I played it for a bit. It plays nice! A little bit of buzz around the 2nd fret I'm going to let the neck settle before deciding if I'll do any fret work on it. the rest of the neck is fine.
I actually like how the pickups are playing together.
