Re: BitQuest! First proto build page 11
It's kinda weird at first hey.. 2 mix controls.. I think it'll be really powerful though, your digital and analog mix, depending on the situation.
The dirt is all digital, although it's not a super extreme kind of distortion like the GC.. I've got a GC and the BQ doesn't really do that kind of sound at all. I've set it up to sound sort of like the Elements, it's a full frequency kind of distortion, about as high gain as the Elements, very saturated. I use several digital filters to tweak the gain into what I think is a cool sounding and versatile distortion... it's probably what I'm most worried about though, since dirt is so subjective to begin with..

This sounds like it'll be really great! That pre-distortion reverb sounds very cool, esp since now I can have very pre and post dirt without needing two reverb pedals.
Just wondering, does it do low gain decently well? I know that it's oriented for high gain, and that's how I'll use it, but I'm curious as to if it sounds good at lower settings as well.
Okie dokie. I feel like the expression acting above the knob position is more versatile, because I can set it to the minimum if I want full control (though I'd have to adjust my expression pedal's settings as well probably), but there's good reason for either setup.Ryan wrote:I have it set up so the expression pedal completely takes over for the pot, total disconnect. I think that way is more powerful for more patches and more users... but with a jumper wire a person could set the wiper of the pot as the end of the expression, letting your expression work from above it or below it depending. I wouldn't hard wire it like that for the public though, I think that would really depend on the user and situation.Bartimaeus wrote: A quick question about the expression - will the expression pedal take over the sweep of the know, or will it control the amount of sweep above the current position of the knob? i.e. when the knob is set at noon, will the expression pedal sweep the full two octaves or will it sweep up from noon?
I'm sure that it's sound great! Having the tone knob will certainly help make it suit different people's needs, so long as the mids are sufficiently present that the distortion doesn't disappear.Ryan wrote:The dirt is all digital, although it's not a super extreme kind of distortion like the GC.. I know what you're saying, but digital distortion in a pedal like this is not exactly going to be a surprise or an unwelcome addition. It's part of the character, part of what you expect. I'd honestly feel a bit weird if you added all that fancy bit crushing goodness and digital time-based effects with an Elements distortion circuit in there. I personally would prefer a unique distortion sound that can usually only be found in digital units like the Geiger Counter. I know you said it won't sound like the Geiger Counter, I just mean it'll be digital and unique like the Geiger Counter, or even the Frazz Dazzler.Ryan wrote:It's kinda weird at first hey.. 2 mix controls.. I guess what I'm saying is, there is a place on my board for digital distortion of the Dr. Scientist ilk.

I wake up every day, look at my pedal board, and pretend one of these is on it.

Re: BitQuest! First proto build page 11
I agree, it's a good way to do it.. the only thing I don't like is that I'd have to force the decision of whether the control works from the top down or bottom up when the pot isn't at an end.. and then whatever I decide will be the opposite of what people will want, Murphy's Law style. So if the expression just takes over completely, I think Murphy can get at me less and it's an easy expected way for the system to work.Bartimaeus wrote: Okie dokie. Great point, I think the BQ has strong mids and cuts nicely. I think it does low gain really well too, from clean boost to gritty overdrive, it's quite smooth through the gain knob with lots of useable tones. It's interesting sounding without being too weird or schticky, I think!Bartimaeus wrote: I'm sure that it's sound great! I hope everybody has this progressive open-mindedness about distortion and I completely agree, an interesting and different sounding distortion should be part of the adventure. That's definitely what I've been working towards and I'm glad you think that's cool! *smile*AngryGoldfish wrote:I know what you're saying, but digital distortion in a pedal like this is not exactly going to be a surprise or an unwelcome addition. There's actually a BitQuest in the mail right now to my Secret Santa, gonna arrive next week.. I'm nervous about it! I think it's ready for prime time though, I'm excited for it to arrive.
Also, the boxes for the ILF run are gonna be at Adam's next week so depending on his holiday schedule we'll be able to get cracking on BQs PDQ!

It's gonna be $250 and I'm hoping to have a shirt with it, plus stickers, plus I'm hoping you guys will get a bit of a choice for the 8 patches too.. I have 9 ready now, could maybe have 10 or 11 ready in a month when this goes down..

OMG what a great price, seriously, I was afraid I would have no shot with the first batch having just quit one of my jobs, but I think I may be able to squeeze it out
