misterstomach wrote:i was gonna say this thread is really lacking in whiskey overall, but woodford reserve is good and knob creek's not too bad. i hate maker's personally. tastes like perfume to me, but to each his own. i'm pickier with bourbon than i really should be. and i like scotch a lot, as long as it's not of the type that tastes like band aids.

for scotch, my favorite as far as bang for the buck is probably arbelour 12 year. it's about $40 but tastes like it could be twice that. i also like macallan, but it's spendy for the good stuff. glennfiddich is pretty decent.

also, templeton rye. old overholt rye. the evan williams rye is actually better than you would think too. those are all in a decent price range.

bulliet bourbon is way too cheap for how good it is. as a result i've made too many mistakes with it and now can't really drink it, but it's good. black maple hill if you're feeling fucking rich.

i also really like jameson. for a good reasonably cheap whiskey that you can get at any bar in america or europe, it can't be beat. nice to have at home as it's fairly palatable to most people. and the newer jameson black label, which is a little pricier is a fucking great bottle to have around the house for a nice shot here and there with a lot of character. powers is good too, a little cheaper, and comes from the same distillery.

truth is, you've just got to step up your whiskey game. no one cares about your vodka and rum and shit if you don't have a good whiskey on hand. all that other shit is for mixed drinks, which can be great and it's nice to have good liquor on hand for it. but whiskey's for drinking. i mean, nothing wrong with a whiskey drink either, but we ain't doing shots of gin. don't serve me a vodka on the rocks. we're not going to sit out in a field under the stars and remember the good old days passing back and forth a bottle of kraken rum. good whiskey and cheap beer is the heart of good drinking.
like you totally dismissed my Old Crow suggestion.

Next you're gonna say you don't drink Old Grand-dad either.

Not that I need mixers, but Whiskey + Ginger and Gin + Tonic are my go to mixed drinks.

You need to get some Kraken in your life. I never used to like rum. Now it's one of my drinks of choice.

Fuck yes mother fucker this is the boss shit

Knob Creek is fucking tits too and no bar is complete without a bottle of Makers Mark.

I only drink bourbon. I'm so over scotch unless it's Ardbeg. But I don't have the cash to throw bown for Ardbeg, I gots a mortgage.....
So this place is probably less than 30 minutes from me. Woodford County is the neighboring county. Drive through it every time I go back to my parents' house.
But I've never tried it. Or any bourbon. I'm a bad Kentuckian.

I mean, for fuck's sake, there's a bourbon trail literally marked along the highway. Yet I haven't tried any of it.

This needs to change.

a couple of years ago i was having this real shitty day. long story, but it sucked. i'm driving home and my piece of shit truck breaks down and quits running. i pull off the road and i'm about half a block down from this bar. it didn't exactly look like my kind of place from the outside but i'm all "fuck it. i need a drink." so i go in there and their special on the board is called a "fuck this day". it's an unfiltered lucky strike, a beer, and a shot of old grandad. fucking perfect. i had a couple of them.

Four Roses has to be my favourite distillery of the moment. The yellow label is really great to sip on a summer's day, creamy oily finish, smooth and delicious. Everything Maker's wishes it was. I've got a single barrel too on the go and it's prett close to perfect.

like Bulleit, Buffalo Trace is great for the price too.

Bulleit, Buffalo Trace, and Four Roses are really excellent for the money.

I love Woodford and Knob Creek.

Colonel EH Taylor (hellfire!) and Balcones Brimstone (FIND IT and any Balcone you can, IT'S THE SHIT) are a couple of my favorite whiskeys and don't really fit my normal preferred profile of a whiskey.

I'm not really into the hard stuff, prefer beer(Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, or Milwaukee's Best Ice) Grey Goose is definitely the best vodka I've had. However, the last time I drank vodka I blacked out and found puke everywhere the next day. Puke on the bed, couch, hallway, in the toilet and on the floor next to toilet. I was mixing Citrus Sky with triple-sec while grilling, never again!!!!!!!!!! Jack is over rated, Makers Mark FTW!! I tried Knob Creek and Woodford Reserve, I guess I liked it just as much as Makers Mark. Johnny Walker- don't remember if its red or black, but which ever of the two leans heavier on the scotch taste is a winner for me. Bushmills is pretty tasty. Any Absinthe drinkers here? Went through many bottles of Kubler 53. I skip the sugar and just add water. Ted Breaux makes great stuff, but I think its overpriced.

If you like gin, go for something local(ish). Berkshire Mountain Distillers has a great gin, if you can find it. http://berkshiremountaindistillers.com/ ... d-edition/

Besides that, you should grab some other herbal liqueurs - Chartreuse, Benedictine, and absinthe are my favorites for making a cocktail a bit more exciting. Also, Angostura bitters and a bottle of sweet vermouth.
