What are your favourite distilleries?

Post by jfrey »

I want to put together a little bar in my apartment of good stuff. For rum, I'm a huge fan of Kraken. Vodka is hands down Ketel One. I'm leaning towards Hendricks for Gin, but I haven't tried a lot of the less well known stuff. What else should I get?

Lagavulin scotch.

Edit - Hendricks is a fine choice for gin. I was also a big fan of Bombay Sapphire which I am sure you have had. Tanqueray also makes some called One I think which is kinda similar to Hendricks in that it is very flowery.

Yeah, I've had all the common ones. Tanqueray Ten I think is really nice in the Summer.

I'll have to see if I can pick some up here. If I can't, well, I may be coming up to Canada for a weekend sometime soon anyway.

Dutch gin. Lovely stuff. Definitely different than English gin (which I personally don't dig).

If we're sticking our pinkies in the air and putting the "u" into favourite, I'd go with Old Crow.

i was gonna say this thread is really lacking in whiskey overall, but woodford reserve is good and knob creek's not too bad. i hate maker's personally. tastes like perfume to me, but to each his own. i'm pickier with bourbon than i really should be. and i like scotch a lot, as long as it's not of the type that tastes like band aids.

for scotch, my favorite as far as bang for the buck is probably arbelour 12 year. it's about $40 but tastes like it could be twice that. i also like macallan, but it's spendy for the good stuff. glennfiddich is pretty decent.

also, templeton rye. old overholt rye. the evan williams rye is actually better than you would think too. those are all in a decent price range.

bulliet bourbon is way too cheap for how good it is. as a result i've made too many mistakes with it and now can't really drink it, but it's good. black maple hill if you're feeling fucking rich.

i also really like jameson. for a good reasonably cheap whiskey that you can get at any bar in america or europe, it can't be beat. nice to have at home as it's fairly palatable to most people. and the newer jameson black label, which is a little pricier is a fucking great bottle to have around the house for a nice shot here and there with a lot of character. powers is good too, a little cheaper, and comes from the same distillery.

truth is, you've just got to step up your whiskey game. no one cares about your vodka and rum and shit if you don't have a good whiskey on hand. all that other shit is for mixed drinks, which can be great and it's nice to have good liquor on hand for it. but whiskey's for drinking. i mean, nothing wrong with a whiskey drink either, but we ain't doing shots of gin. don't serve me a vodka on the rocks. we're not going to sit out in a field under the stars and remember the good old days passing back and forth a bottle of kraken rum. good whiskey and cheap beer is the heart of good drinking.
