A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuchman, a history book about life in the "disastrous" 14th century when plague, war and all forms of awfulness were at a peak. i've read it before, and it always makes me feel better about my current circumstances.

I like Huxley's writing style much more than Orwell's. I keep meaning to read Utopia, but I never have gotten past Ch.3...it's good from the little that I've read though

Any of you guys ever read Jewgeni Samjatin? His novel "us" appears to have inspired both Orwell and Huxley. And it's better than both.


Edit: English transliteration is Evgenij Ivanovič Zamjatin and the novel is called We, not Us.

Joe Abercrombie's First Law series. Halfway through Before They Are Hanged (book 2) now. This is filling the ASOIAF void quite nicely for now. I get the comparisons, but it's better in some ways and I don't think it's nearly as style-biting as some fools claim it to be. GRRM himself is actually pretty supportive of it too.

Really like that series. Especially the inquisitor is a great character. But all of them are beautifully crafted I think.

Currently all I'm reading is literature for the essay I'm writing at Uni, which isn't all too bad. But I looong for february when I go back to work and can read fiction again. Right now, as soon as I have any spare time, I want to do everything else but read a book.

The last book i read was Paul Kelly's autobiography and it was a PHENOMENAL piece of work. That man knows his way around the English language. Highly recommended, especially to Aussies

Just started reading Morrissey's autobiography. I love me some Morrissey, but so far I'm not 100% sold on this book. Some of it feels like trying to hard for fancy writing, while some of it is actually really nice, and the whole effect has been disconcerting because it's an unusual way of writing. Maybe it'll get better or I'll get used to it.

Does anyone have some good short story anthologies (or even individual stories) to recommend? I've read both of Kurt Vonnegut's short story anthologies (Bagombo Snuff Box is my favorite book of all time), Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, and am currently working on Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger.

I think I love short stories so much because of how easy it is to read and reread them. I love how every sentence is important to the story or character development. I don't really have the time these days to devote to reading long novels (as much as I'd like to), so I mostly just read short stories as I find them. Any suggestions?
