Audio system HiFi
My Amp and CD player are going bad... they both have 13 years.
They both been repair once.
The amp sometimes lost the left channel and is noisy.
The CD player sometimes start at the 10th songs.
Amp: Rega Luna
CD player: Rotel RCD-951
Should I get them repair or should I save to change them?

dac chips have come a long way in 13 years, i'd suggest getting a comparable modern replacement for the rotel. check audiogon.com its like ebay for secondhand hifi equipment. i've bought and sold off that site from back in the late 99's. very safe place.sylnau wrote:My Amp and CD player are going bad... they both have 13 years.

they also have very very good forums at audiogon, I imagine you'll get better advice than I can give regarding your amp and cd player.
*i havn't used audiogon in the last 5 years now that my stereo's are where i want them.

Re: Audio system HiFi
That's some decent gear you have there, but it may cost more to repair than they are worth. If you really like them and can find a good electronics repair guy, it may be worth a shot, or at least getting a quote.
How much $$$ do you have to get into a new system? Also, what are you running for speakers? Also, is it still mainly CDs that you listen to, or are you (like me) moving more towards using computers/ipod/digital files? Depending upon all these answers, it could dictate what you choose to do.
Clearly its a bad idea to get me talking audio (kind of my alternate obsession). Anyway, maybe start with a repair quote.

I would love to et the REGA Brio R.
But no budget for that at the moment.

Re: Audio system HiFi
Yeah, the Brio-R is a nice amp, and the matching DAC that they have for it is also apparently quite good.
If you like the British audio sound, maybe look into picking up an older Creek amp, like a 4340 (I'm biased, I love Creek), or even another Rega unit. canuckaudiomart has a lot of nice used gear in their classifieds, I'd suggest taking a look there if you haven't already. Still depends though upon what you the potential cost to repair your amp would be. One thing to think about though is if you fix it, you should get another good decade or more out of it. The CD player is a different story though, that's probably worth an upgrade. Consider getting something cheaper that is working but has a digital out, and then you can just use the player as the transport and down the line hook it up through whatever DAC is the best/cheapest out there at the time. The DAC can then also process your digital files from other sources too, like computer, etc.

Re: Audio system HiFi
Have you ever tried a Naim?
Are they an upgrade on a Rega?
Or maybe I will get the Rega Luna repair for the second time.
13 years might not be that old for an amp.
Will probably cost $150 to change the head of the CD player... and around the same price to fix the amp.
In 2009 it cost me 115$ to fix the amp.

Nah, never tried a Naim. I've heard lots about them, but its all second hand information and reviews and whatnot. They are supposed to be unique amps. Not cheap either, Rega gear is a lot more accessible IMO.
13 years isn't that old for an amp (this coming from a guy with a couple of early 1970s receivers
), but if it has been in for two repairs already...I dunno. I think the expected life for capacitors is something like 30 years?
That seems to me like a lot for the CD player, but then it is a decent one. I wonder what you could sell it for? I'm out of the CD player market these days, so I'm less in touch with valuations and whatnot.

I guess I'll keep the CD Player the way it is until it's completly broken.
Probably get the amp repair. I can't even sell it if it's not in good working order.
Speaker are Monitor Audio Silver 5.
Cable... Van Den Hul Cleartrack and MIT connectors.

Ohhhhhhhh those are some nice speakers! They definitely deserve a nice amp, I'm sure your Rega is a nice match when its running fine.
If you haven't before, take a peek at the classifieds here sometime:

Hope it works out for you!

Re: Audio system HiFi
Just drop the amp at the store this morning.
56$/hour... Would be probably a 2 hours job.
I would have love to replace it with a Rega Brio R or a Naim and a new CD player or a DAC converter.
But it's a bad timimg, I'm broken.
