Growing up in Austin was fantastic. i know it's just a trip, but there's tons of summertime activities/camps to keep them busy between school years, for outdoorsy kids, nerds (child larping), science, rock and roll, more than you can shake a stick at. Central Hill Country rules for daytripping+hiking. Also chiming in to say Austin is very queer friendly (rip leslie)
Not the most walkable. If you get a hotel near downtown or campus you should be alright though.
New Orleans is my favorite city by far. Great food, great people, it's a beautiful place. The Garden District, uptown, the Marigny, parts of the French Quarter, Bywater. No other place like it. I get to work there every couple of years, thankfully. I have fun just driving around the different neighborhoods. That city has real character.
Virginia is fine, just avoid areas where money seems to be scarce Massanutten is badass if you're into the outdoors thing, a few hours away from Richmond though

Since I typed they they found his crack pipe tape. I'm guess TO will be a nice place to visit sooner than later

A former mayor of Washington DC was also a crackhead
