I mean, Denton or Austin would work. I kinda think Austin.is a bit spread out for walking around, but that's just me.

Re: Queer Friendly Cities in the Southern US?
Thanks for all these ideas. I've got some research to do.
Blackout's in Asheville, too, right?
Austin and New Orleans are definitely strong contenders.
I have a kind of irrational hatred of Florida...
Toronto's tempting but it'll probably be in April and we don't want to have to pack our snow shovels. (I'm so sorry about the mayor.)
Blinky is super cute. I love the Berkshires and Catskills for romantic bed and breakfast kind of vacations but not so much with the kid.

A visit to Atlanta could result in a possible meetup with me and the Mrs (I have kids also, so I wouldn't show up wasted, and would watch my potty mouth)...come to think, I'd probably choose the Moog HQ over me, too.

True. We're friendly to all tourists.Chankgeez wrote:Savannah, GA?
I've lived here for 12 years, and have never once heard any negative stories. In fact, there was a period of a few years where my wife and I hosted a mid-50s queer couple (their term... settle down boys). They came for a couple of thanksgivings, a couple of St. Patrick's Days, and a couple of other random times. We went out to the downtown area every time, and never had anything but a good time.
Savannah is a beautiful city, and if you haven't visited, you should. Our entire downtown area is a National Historic Landmark District, so there are plenty of places to walk. We have a very nice riverfront area, where restaurants and shops line the cobblestone streets. We have walking tours, segway tours, trolley tours, horse tours, hearse tours (!). We have haunted pub tours, ghost tours, bike-and-booze tours, movie tours, food movie tours, and a bunch I am missing, I am sure.
We don't have much in terms of street food, but we make up for it with free flowing booze. It is legal to walk around and drink in public here. It is a very popular activity.
The beach is 12 miles away. We are a short ride (20 mins) from the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, where you can go see alligators in their natural habitat, with no fences.
We have had a lot of movies filmed here, too, so a lot of people come here to see where their favorite films were shot. Forest Gump, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Legend of Bagger Vance, Glory, The Last Song (Miley Cyrus... hah!). They just wrapped up shooting Spongebob 2. Over the summer, they filmed a movie three blocks from my house called Killing Winston Jones, and if the bike riding scene makes it, my house will be in the movie.
I recommend that you consider St. Pat's, when our city hosts the 2nd largest celebration in the nation, second only to New York. Yes, drunk ol' Savannah beats Boston on St. Pat's. You would probably want to book a room now, though, and you still might not find one.
I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
Mike

New Orleans is great ( though I havent been post Katrina). However, it definitely would not be my first, second nor third choice with children involved. I really like Austin as well but with kids..again...I dont know. I remember as a kid I liked Taos and Santa Fe New mexico with all the adobe structures.
