I built a SFT with a boost switchable before or after. I think the SFT sounds more grindy with the gain around mid and a boost pushing the front end. Gets you a thump with low gain, then grind with a boost. But a big part of that is also the eq. There isn't much grind with the treble control set below 2:00.Seizurema wrote:At 18v the SFT becomes much less farty and much more ... 'distortion-like'. LOTS of smoother gain is added throughout it's range. Definitely sounds a lot better cranked in 18v mode.
But no roar, no grind to speak of. It seems to be good at VERY low gain tones, where it does add a certain warmth of character (toobsiness) and a bit of compression. But it sounds it's best a bit tooo low-gain for me... B15 ish smooth fingerstyle stuff... getting your slightly hairy motown on ..
Looking to replace it with a Mini or a Savior Machine. (Or maybe a Talons). I bought it as somewhat of a "breaking-up tube amp simulator" to run various dirt into but it doesn't play that well with others.
The Mini can get similar tones. Not exact since they are very different by their nature. I like the Mini more on its own, but the SFT handles a boost better. And the Mini definitely has more grind/fuzziness to it.
Maybe I'll A/B them sometime if I remember. But you should try them both anyways. Never enough dirt, right?
