The only thing holding me off doing something fiscally irresponsible is the thought of shipping costs to the UK... (and not quite having the money just yet.)

Besides what's on the site, the "Normal" input on the Mother is inspired by the early 70's Hiwatt DR201 with the addition of the "Depth" control, which is similar to the "Bass Boost" or "FAC" control found on vintage MATAMPs and Oranges. This makes the amp even more friendly for guitar or bass than it is to begin with. The OD circuitry is of my own creation, and adds 2 additional gain stages and circuitry in "front" of the Normal channel. It has its own dedicated "Drive" control that works in tandem with the Normal input's "Gain" control. This allows fine tuning the of the overdrive and the ability to go from just slightly broken up sounds to super saturated. I love the vintage Hiwatt sound for huge clean tones, and it was a great building block. My design philosophy in general is to add versatility to classic designs without gimmicks and keep things as simple as possible at the same time. Reliability and serviceability are also tantamount, which is why I added the user-bias controls for each output tube, output tube fusing, fan etc. They just don't make tubes like they used to, so for me the payoff for extra features like these is worth it. Hope that helps!

Thanks!

Alex

I have to say, I love the look of your cabs.

Good stuff. I read something about building cabs for with 15s voiced for guitar. Is that a one off thing or do you plan to bring that into production?

Thanks a lot for compliments! It's true that I am currently working on a ported 2x15 with Eminence's Kappa Pro 15A speakers to go with the Mother amp for bass (or guitar depending on what you're into). I also wanted to do a sealed version for a tighter more "rock" bass cab (maybe with Eminence's Delta Pro speakers instead) that would also be better suited for guitar. This one could alternatively use Emi's Big Ben or Commonwealth speakers for a more familiar 15" guitar tone, although I have not demoed either of those speakers yet.

I'm really wanting to grab a Science 2x12 loaded with Eminence Private Jacks in the near future. Alex and I discussed speaker options a bit and those sound truly perfect for the Shiv. Love both the look of the cabs and the fact that the back is removable to go either closed or open back. Also, Alex just bumped up the 2x12 dimensions a bit and added recessed handles, both of which I prefer to the original design. :thumb:

He uses American made ClassicTone iron in the amps I've seen.

The Mother uses Heyboer custom power and output transformers, made in Michigan. The other amps all use a combination of Magnetic Components iron (who make the Classic Tone, Dynaco clone stuff, and many OEM transformers (Two Rock, Splawn, and Victoria for example) which are made in Chicago. Both are really excellent quality. I mix and match for both tonal and practical reasons.

By the way, this site is bad for me - I've already ordered parts for an EA style trem :) So much for getting away from the solder fumes for a moment...
