Do you think an artistic social media site could succeed?

Post by Psyre »

I've had an idea (noone steal it!!! ) To design a social media experience for the arts of all types. Essentially a conglomerate of music, drawing, painters, film makers, photographers etc to display their work and find new outlets to further their work. A way for musicians to connect with people to design artwork or local videographers for videos and so on. Do you think there is a use or need for such a specific social media, could it be beneficial? Would any of you use such a thing?

If done properly, I definitely think something like that would be useful and beneficial. I would use it if there was a large enough user community.

So basically some sort of mashup between soundcloud/deviantart etc that lets you display your art and network with others that are interested in it to take commissions and collaborate?

yes, exactly, just need to figure out a way to filter the user base, verify people's involvement with the arts.

I'd be down. What do you mean by verifying someone's involvement with the arts?

Well it would be formusicians, painters, videographers, photographers not really an open social media like you would think of facebook or myspace. I guess you could do what reverbnation does and have artist accounts and general accounts?

I think so, but this isn't an original idea...as sites like flickr, deviantart and vampire freaks have been around for years.
And Instagram to a much lesser extent...
Youtube might even fit the description at times, but that's really another animal.

Just about everyone fancies themselves as being creative or artistic, but this vision seems to quickly become niche in execution.
In developing and pursuing this idea, you can strive for mass appeal or target an audience; and I think the latter has more of a chance for success.
Do you want the core community to be casual or devoted users? I'm thinking it's the serious devotees you're after.
The tricky part is keeping people like that interested once you've gotten their attention.

Either way, I suggest investment in designing a user experience that doesn't just recycle the same old templates...and clearly outline community guidelines to discourage hacks from clogging up bandwidth with photos of their dressed up pets, kids and selfies.

Well I have never seen flickr or deviantart as a true networking experience, they are more of online showcases such as bandcamp.

Band camp's trying to get into the social networking thing with their new "fan page" setup, where you can show off what albums you've purchased there and review them, but it's certainly not integrated in a coherent way yet.

^^^THIS.

I feel like if somehow bandcamp and soundcloud were one entity we;d be getting somewhere. I love bandcamp because you can continue to upload stuff for free, and download it in whatever quality you want, and I love soundcloud because you can follow, message, and so on.....

Deviantart would be along that track if it wasn't so full of terrible artists. That being said, there are some good and a few great ones there. But you kind of have to wade through all the crap first.

It'd have to offer something significant for people to care - there's so many showcase type sites out there plus normal social media stuff that there's going to be a 'another one?' question raised over and over again.

Networking with fellow artists is great and all but I see forums and existing groups on social media filling that niche already.
