Godspeed and Polaris
So GYBE wins a $30,000 grand prize for set up for up and coming Canadian "indie" artists. Than they rip the event and donate money to prison music programs...
Musicians with integrity.....or riders sitting on a high horse?
Past winners include: Feist, Karkwa, Fucked Up, Patrick Watson and Arcade Fire... so this is a legit award, but should artists be encouraged to compete against each other? Should federal and provincial cash awards be given to the winner in this winner take all situation?

"If the point of this prize and party is acknowledging music-labour performed in the name of something other than quick money, well then, maybe the next celebration should happen in a cruddier hall, without the corporate banners and culture overlords,"
I think they have a good point
And the prize money went to a good cause, anyway.

That's a tricky line.backwardsvoyager wrote: "If the point of this prize and party is acknowledging music-labour performed in the name of something other than quick money, well then, maybe the next celebration should happen in a cruddier hall, without the corporate banners and culture overlords,"
One assumes, for example, that there would be many corporate banners and culture overlords present at all of their NIN tour spots.
Also, without having any insight into their finances, it does seem that Godspeed as a musical entity can afford to donate all of that money, which would seem to undercut the award a little bit, based as it seems to be in supporting musicians making "non-commercial" music.
On the flip side, their music is awesome, they won the award, and they have every right to use the money as they see fit.
