Power Supply: I've been eyeing the CIOKS offerings. Anything that should prevent me from getting f.i. a Big John?
Cables: George L vs Lava vs. Diago. Which ones should I get? I'm not good at soldering cables, so while I did use home-made stuff it was a pain.
Digital Delays: school me on the BOSS offerings. I am looking to get something cheap off of eBay, but I want it to be awesome too. So out of the various DD versions there are, which are the main differences? I would look for crisp repeats, long delay time, some sort of Tap possibility. Maybe a modulated delay for giggles, nothing special.
1) Pedaltrains are great, lots of variety and room for mounting power supplies and running cables underneath and their indestructible. I actually have a PT-1 w/ hardcase I'm getting ready to put in the BST but shipping to Germany would probably be insane.
2) Cioks are awesome, just make sure if they are one of the ones with the propietary power cable to order a back up or two just in case you accidentally damage or lose one.
3) I only have experience with Lava's which is pretty much all I use for solderless, but alot of people don't like them because of the learning curve to build them right. They may work for a bit but then randomly short out unless you get them built 100% correct.
4) DD-5, I'm trying to pick up another one of these as I miss mine dearly and I'm looking for the exact same thing as you; crisp clear delays and tap tempo. But If you need more then 2 seconds delay then look at the DD-7.

Phantasmagoric: get Cioks. It's that simple. Cables- focus more on good mechanical construction than capacitance and crap. A good output buffer is way more important. Any of the new boss pedals have a good buffer, or I can build you one.

Re: new board - need some hints
I like the tape-on-carpet "pedalboard" drawing board
If your board, once complete, will be living at home or in the studio...I recommend a wire shelf solution similar to the one I use. It came together for <20usd yielding 24x12" (PT2 sized) and because of it's crossbeam style layout, you don't need to mess with velcro...pedals can be held in place via stick-on feet between beams.
If you're going to gig the board then go for a legit PT with flight case, it's an expense that will provide some peace of mind.
Cioks are quality supplies, def.
They'd be the perfect psu if only there were a tube-pedal output (12V 1250mA) but most people do not need such an option.
Although most people don't have a Valve Klipper...but I digress, as that has an internal transformer and hardwired power cord iirc...
As for digital delay, I too will recommend dd7 or ps-3. Or SMMH for a little bit more...
Cables? Whatever you can get for a bargain.
It's really trial&error...I personally like using low capacitance patches and a higher cap 1st run from guitar to 1st pedal, which in my case is a TB dual loop...
I have a mix of generic, molded cheapy Hosa, top tier Canare/Mogami and plenty of in-betweens.
Regardless of what you choose, I recommend grabbing a TB dual (or more) loop.
It makes A/Bing changes a lot easier to compare and analyze as you're auditioning things, and helps you hone in on problematic noise/crackle/etc when they develop...which they will, if you're consistently changing things around.

Re: new board - need some hints
Thanks, dudes.
AA, I've read a review of the PT1 where the dude was complaining about the quality of the hard case. Wa that just a case of bad luck or is it really not so good. I'm sitting at the bar in a huge instruments megastore and waiting on a PT2 with soft case. I want to see it before ordering. Actually I would like to have it all fixed up for tonight's rehearsal but the guys don't stock the PT1 here... Gnar
At least I have already checked out the DD5 and DD7, I liked the 7 much more for versatility. There is a sort of flanger mode that sounds badass. They have the alter ego and I will try that in a minute.
Checking who stocks the pt1 on the net now.
Wish me luck.

Music Store funtime? The soft case is totally ok for taking the board to rehearsals etc. I would only get a hard case if you plan a tour or are forced to stack things often.
Have you considered the TC Nova Repeater? Could be an option.

Cable: anything but George L (they are very colored). I use Monorail.
Digital Delay: Take a look at the SuperDelay.

Well to be honest it's not the greatest hardcase, I would say its a touring or gigging quality hardcase but its definitely not a "flight case". I have the newer PT2 and PTjr both with the newer hardcases and they are true flight case's, much better quality. The PT1 hardcase has cheaper corners and locks and they barely put any glue on the back of the foam inside the lid. That said its perfectly functional if your loading your gear in and out of van's, actually its excellent for that and wouldn't hesitate to pick one up for that, but if you plan on flying I don't trust the "throwers" in baggage handling with it, well that and it doesnt have the holes for an actual lock to be put on the clasps.

Patch cable: these. Just got the same ones from the same guy. Pancakes=tighter fits with the board gets full (for side jacks anyway) and theyre long enough to route the pedals together even at a distance. AND CHEAP.

I got a pt2 with a soft case. Case isnt too bad for a softie. I havent actually toted my shit around in it but its got a life time warrenty so I wouldnt be afraid of it ripping or being torn. Pt2 is a tad larger than the 1 but why not go bigger to fill it up as time comes?
And the pedal power that fits perfectly underneath...I couldnt be happier. Tossed my 1spot and daisy chain in the pt case incase anything happens in the future.

Haha, I would need a bigger board to fit those cables in I think...
I would look at the boards if I were you, but I don't think I will be able to afford one too soon.
All the trying out has me wanting a Strat and one of the Epi Crestwood reissues.
But the times are not for new guitars.
I went with a PT1 with that hard case, it is sort of odd that they use a case with so much extra room. Maybe I will update to a mono bag one day.
Have not decided on the digital delay yet. The special modes on the Alter Ego sounded like rubbish to me. And it's more expensive and looks like crap. It's not golden, it's actually beige. Blegh. I guess I will go for the DD7. Since it is such a run of the mill pedal I will want to get one used for a bargain. Sigh.
Other than that I will probably solder some of my own pancakes. (Thanks for the eBay link, but shipping those to Germany seems like a waste.)
I got the polytune noir on a bargain, the salesman in the store offered me his used one. Cool.

Just for reference heres a shot of a PT1 with the old style hardcase (bottom) vs PT2 with newer style hardcase (top). You can see the major design differences.

Re: new board - need some hints
That is a lot o difference even. Does the newer style hard case also have that much extra room? It fits snug on the sides but there is a couple of extra centimeters to the top.
