In the UK you actually have to jump through a lot of hoops to get SRS surgery. And on some level that's definitely fair, it shouldn't be a decision one makes lightly, but I think it's wrong to misrepresent it as a "crazy" thing to do. And I'm not slagging off anyone who doesn't support it being publicly funded, but I completely do.

I don't think it crazy (well maybe a little but, do what thou wilt) BUT I don't want to pay for it and I don't think this is the purpose of government. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't mind paying for a few implants for the sake of bigger boobies but that's still not what we have a government for. The problem is not that these women have a low self esteem because their tits are not big enough, the problem is that they think they will feel better with bigger tits. Does that make seance? It's early and I'm still waking up.

Yeah I understand your point of view and I completely agree that the government shouldn't pay for unnecessary medical procedures. I think our difference of opinion is just on where exactly the line gets drawn on what's "necessary" and the conversation has got a bit confused? I do not think that purely cosmetic surgeries like breast implants (except where people have had mastectomies and such) should be funded by the state, but I think that hormone therapy and SRS surgeries for trans people should be. I see it as the difference between someone wanting to look different so they feel better about themselves and someone who's severely unhappy being in a body that doesn't conform to their gender identity.

I agree. Surgeries to change sex is something that should be supported by the government if the person fits a particular criteria. If their mental security is at stake, their whole life is at stake. If SRS surgery will 'correct' this then I think it should be a part of the system, but again with strict guidelines.
