Ambien is some wild stuff. One time I took Ambien and was moving furniture around the house at 3am in my underwear. My dad woke up and had a whole conversation with me. I don't remember that, but he said I seemed completely normal. All I know is I woke up and there was a desk in my room that had been in the other room the night before.

Oh, and another night I wrote this (I had to write a micro-writing for some informal short-story competition):

Code: Select all

Mourning After Pills

Johnny awoke abruptly. His body felt heavy and he could hardly move his head. The room was dim. The only light was filtering through the window shades from the outside. An alarm clock, an empty highball glass, and a half-empty bottle of sleeping pills sat on the night stand. The clock was blinking "12:00."

It took all of his strength to get out of bed, but as soon as both feet were on the ground, the room was spinning. He threw open the door, took a hurried ten paces, and vomited into the toilet. When he had finished, Johnny wiped his face with the sheet of paper he suddenly realized he had been clutching in his left hand. On his way to the bathroom, he had inadvertently pulled it off the outside of his bedroom door where it had been taped the night before. Now covered in half-digested whisky and kung-pow chicken, he could hardly make out what he had written on it. All that Johnny, in a semi-paralysis on the floor, could recognize were a few names: Marco, Caroline, his parents, the rest was illegible. He didn't quite remember all the words, but he knew the purpose of that note when he made those violent, addled strokes across the page the night before. And now it was moot as he'd be the only one to see that paper as he flushed it down the toilet.

After an hour in the bathtub, he made his way onto the couch. From there, Johnny could reach his phone in order to check his voicemail. Both messages were from earlier in the day:

The First Message: "Hey Johnny! It's Marco. I'm sorry, after the power went out, I couldn't make it out last night to help with, uh, what did you say you needed help with? Something about moving boxes of Caroline's stuff, but that I should check your room first. You were kinda slurring when we talked last night. Are you ok, man? I'm sure this whole thing sucks for you. Call me back when you get this."

The Second Message: "Johnny. It's Caroline, calling to remind you that I'll be coming with Rick to get the rest of my stuff today. We'll be there right at three. I still have the key and Rick's with me, so you don't even need to be there."

Johnny looked around the room. Three large boxes and one smaller box occupied an entire corner of the small apartment room. "Those are hers and the rest is mine," he thought, "I don't even need to be here." His watch said two o'clock as he walked down onto the street. He decided to give Marco a call. His whole body hated him, but his mind was screaming for a beer.

Benzos are good though. Probably the best thing.

I don't have experience with zzzquil, but I'd stay away from OTC antihistamines. Those tend to induce restless leg syndrome really badly. Basicall they make you feel like your bones are trying to jump out of your body and you have no option but to convulse for hours.

pills are not answer

behndy, what is your 'sleeping environment' - how light is the room? and how much noise?
the most important thing is for it to be as dark as possible, pitch black ideally

also what are you doing before going to sleep?
i can find myself feeling tired in the evening, but instead of going to sleep at that point "because its too early", if i get involved in doing something that awakens and stimulates me, and that has me planning things or feeling stressed/anxious, then i find it hard to get asleep later

any chance you can grab a quick nap here and there? some people work well with getting a few short naps throughout the week in addition to their normal weird sleep schedule.

This can be good, but you got to limit your naps to 20-30 minutes tops!

Benerdryl (50mg diphenhydramine) knocks me the fuck out. Like, amazing death sleep. But I've read that after three nights of consecutive use, your body builds up tolerance and it's no more effective than placebo. So I only take it 2-3 days a month.

Alternate with melatonin one night, passionflower + valerian another, the devil's lettuce another...

i actually hate sleeping in the pitch dark. i leave the ceiling fan on every night because i run ridiculusly hawt, so there's a touch of white noise. but i keep the hall light on. i live alone and i'm more comfy with some illumination when i wake.
Doctor X wrote: also what are you doing before going to sleep?
most nights watching movies or playing vidja games, reading, working on musics. i usually end up in bed reading interwubz stuff on my fone or 'pad or reading stuff thru a Kindle app. always decompression, mind relaxing shtuff.

oof. yah. if i crash out midday for more than an hour it makes the sleep i do get super fitful. like, MESSY. i get this thing where if i'm tired and trying to sleep hard, if it's only a few seconds/minutes nodding off like a puppy going down and out when i start awake i have a blinding headache. i usually kinda need a good chunk or nothing.

yah. usually how i roll. most only thing i take is a vicoden now and then for fun, and i usally save those for days i get massages 'cause i get this AWESOMELY enjoyable time dilation effect where an hour massage feels like 4-5 hours. yummmmmmy.

like, i'm not unhappy how i am. i just wonder if it's something that my body's adapted to for now and will cause problems later, or if i'm just built like this. reading about the negative effects of insomnia is SKEERY. but i don't get low energy or drag ass or spaced out i think. murrrrrrr.

sleep is an extremely important physiological function, yes

silence would be best but a continuous ceiling fan may be ok as its easier to tune out of your concious (i am by a main road at the moment and that is harder with the intermittent traffic noise and people talking/shouting, its definitely affected my sleeping the past few years)
is the fan blowing air on you? that may not help if the air movement is stimulating your skin

movies, reading and maybe mindless browsing might be ok, but for me playing (most) video games and doing music is too stimulating and generally makes me too alert to be doing as the last thing before going to bed.

as for the darkness, that for me is the biggest single factor. the light goes through your eyelids and is stimulating your brain. its makes it so much harder to go into a deep sleep, the important restorative kind of sleep.
i dont know if you have external noise from cars/people/animals, if you are not able to get into a deep sleep then you can be awoken easier out of the shallow sleep by those noises.

just as a general point ... people can be afraid to sleep, and of the dark, if they have bad memories, traumas, fears and insecurities of something that happened to them - it could be an issue from childhood or traumatic events in later life, or it can just be stress and worries in general and being unable to switch off and 'relax', and feel secure.

lol. urrrrrm. i have silly reasons i don't like sleeping in total darkness. no traumatic ones though i think. i might try that for a bit, but i don't enjoy it.

yah the fan's halfway above the bed. but i DO run crazy hot, so if i use any bedding at all i kinda need a fan going. otherwise i wake up drenched in sweat. and that's nasssssty.

Chankies - eep. if that's true, i'm fucked. or gonna have to start taking melatonin supplements. i switched over to Kindle/eBooks a bit ago, gifted out all my real world books, and i'm not going back. if it's a 2 hours = badness thing i MIGHT be able to keep it around an hour of reading before sleeping.... but i dunno. i spend a lot of time online and most of that's through my phone or 'Pad, all my reading's done on those also.

hurm. might see if there's a Melatonin Levels Test my doctor can do.

INNNTERRRRRESSSTINNNNNNG.

I can't sleep if their is any light in a room
I have blackout curtains cover alarm clocks and everything

I have noticed that if I read a ton on my kindle late at night that my brain tends to spin a bit when I first try to sleep

I keep rereading the part about you being afraid of the dark behndyman that sucks............

is there very high ambient temperature/humidity?
otherwise being too hot goes hand in hand with being over stimulated and alert, and you're metabolism is running high and 'ready for action'

you need to be a relaxed baby sloth, snuggling up for nighttime beddy-byes, not a hyperactive mouse on the alert for snakes and owls
