SWR SM-400

Post by MeSoFuzzy »

A buddy of mine is letting me borrow this amp. He'll sell it to me for $200 if I want it. I like how it sounds, but wanted to know if there's any thing I should know about this amp. It gets pretty hot! It needs a fuse and fuse cap for one of the outs. Its 200 watts on each out, or 400 bridged mono. If its worth buying, I'll replace the fuse and cap
.

Looks like you've answered your own question right there. $200 looks like a steal, at least going by the ebay:

Here's a couple threads from the google that're similar:

Remember, if it sounds good, it is good.

I just don't want to buy an amp that's prone to problems. The more I play with it, the more I like it. Bass, Wretch Machine, Monotribe, :joy:

They're cool amps, and this one is pre-Fender buyout. They're pretty clean sounding but have a wide range of tone-sculpting thru the EQ, $200 is a really good deal IF it works correctly.
It looks like it may have a replaced power switch, and if it gets abnormally hot, you might ask about repair history...
Special low-frequency version.

The switch has definitely been replaced. My friend bought the amp used. I don't think its been in for repairs while he's owned it. I don't know If I'm just being paranoid about the heat. Its been about 15 years since I've had a bass amp. The manual says it is normal for it to get hot when running at 4 ohms. My cab is an 8ohm, but then again, I've had the amp cranked. I do plan on adding a 1x18. No internal fan, it relies on the aluminum case for convection cooling. Maybe I'm just worrying too much. Yes, the eq on this amp is awesome. It also has an "aural enhancer," which brings out some interesting tones. Tomorrow night, I'm going to make a video of my Wretch Machine going through this amp. And 600 mics. of blotter :)* Shits gonna be fucking killer :yay:

I was going to make a video, or atleast record last night. But, holyshiiiiitttttttttttttttttttttt, I had an insane night. Dude from work is hanging out, we jam on bass through a rainbow machine, and the wretch machine. Everything is going super cool. We then start having weird conversations about god, creation of man, trusting the right people, and that sort of stuff. After that, he disrobes and starts attacking my boyfriend. Then he attacked me when I came to my boyfriends aid. We try to get this deranged lunatic under control, but we had no choice but to force him out of the house and throw his pants and skivvies out with him. He then starts running around the neighbors yards, hanging off of trees, banging up mail boxes, yelling and screaming, just fucking totally out to lunch. The cops show up and had to tazzzzzze his ass twice until he just flattened out like a board. How was your Fri. night? That guy is so fucked :picard:
