I like All Day just fine. I mean, it's perfect for doing exactly what I want it to do, which is give me a good IPA taste at the ABV of a PBR. Meaning, when I start drinking faster because Municipal Waste demands it, I'm not wasted by the time the set has finished.

I happen to live in Grand Rapids, MI so Founders is just a few minutes away from the house. The beer there is all great but the clientele is often worth less than a broke dick. I prefer to get my Founders and go, but if you can hit the brewery up on lunch and get a sandwich you're probably in a good spot. Fortunately Grand Rapids has breweries like the "Show Your Pedalboard" thread has pedals. They're everywhere, they're good, and most often they cause a bit of envy.

I know what you mean. First time I saw Municipal Waste they had Centennial IPA on tap and work the next day was really rough.

Good to know. I'm gonna be in Ann Arbor in a few weeks and I'm kinda excited to have Bell's and Founders easily in hand.

I've lived entirely in cities that have good breweries in short driving distance. I grew up in Cleveland, with GLBC around the corner, I went to college at the University of Vermont which was breweriesbreweriesbreweries everywhere, which is part of the reason I got so enthusiastic about beer -- the stores had all sorts of amazing local and national micros, and you could walk down the street and have a great burger and a Heady Topper or something from Hill Farmstead on tap and it's heaven on earth, and even in Nashville there's a great scene popping up here. Yazoo and Jackalope are spearheading a movement here that's getting better and better by the day.

this is precisely how grand rapids is, now. it's pretty great. if you decide to make a trip out this way from Ann Arbor let me know. We can do a brew tour and eat too much pub food.

Yeah, I don't do it anymore, hard lesson learnt. Also, I'm so off chops these days I'm more than happy to let others take the lead. I'm also one to just want to make things work, I love a challenge. The way I write though is basically a riff, think about where you can take it, then when you have a few parts, think about how to order them and how the transitions will go, and then I think about variations within. Usually at about that point the structure gets rewired as well. I love song writing and arranging the most about being in a band and making music to me that's where the real artistry is. But I have learnt to be democratic about it, as hard as that is, just because if I can't reconcile what's in my head with what I'm hearing I feel, I dunno, disappointed. I know that sounds arrogant, but I can't shred, so being flashy lead guy is out for me, I'm a solid riffer and ok noise maker, and if I'm on vocal duties I'm alright, I think my lyric writing is ok, but tied closely to that is the actual structure and composition of the piece, and that's kinda where I feel most comfortable. Like I said though, you gotta be open minded.
Last thing I was in we used the camcorder method. Shit is helpful as fuck. You end up discarding a lot but it keeps QA up as well as general band contentedness.

I would rarely ever write a bass part that just played the root notes of the riff, or a drum pattern that only ever accented the even numbers in the bar. Don't get me wrong, I love it when a simple, driving riff comes together and the band is all in synch. It's all about pacing, tension, and anticipation; giving in to that want and desire, or refusing it.

Sorry for multiple posts but I'm super enthusiastic about beer.

I don't suppose you have any recommendations for Europe or British beers? It might cost a lot to import American ones, and I would have no idea where to start. I have no preferences as to types of beer that I like. I'm just experimenting at this early stage in the game.

BG Pups are really popular and very affordable for a handmade pickup. They offer a humbucker-sized P90. I have a few others saved, like D Allen, Lollar, Fralin and Harmonic Design who all offer P90s in a humbucker housing.

I haven't brewed anything yet though my girlfriend and I are gearing up to do a homebrew project in the near future. I took the brewing class as my last elective in college, so I've got a good idea of what to do. We've been helping our friend with a couple of his last homebrew batches. One of these days, I want to brew a double IPA and name it Wendigo.

You must have gone to a very rad college. I love brewing - such a gratifying hobby. Plus it generally costs less for me to drink than if I were buying beer.

I have brewed a couple of IPAs, but should really try my hand at making an imperial or double IPA sometime. Also, Wendigo might be the best name for a beer ever.

I have always hated hated hated when bands would scribble their logo on top of a burned cdr and put it in a case with no kind of artwork or anything and try to sell it. I mean, you spend all that time writing songs, recording and making your music try to sound its best so why not make the packaging represent as well. I take a lot of pride in it and most of the time feel guilty for charging what everyone else does for their shitty looking demo. I want you to get your money's worth, especially in this age of digital downloads and whatnot. When I first got into music, when I got a new tape or cd and put it on and stared at the artwork, reading all of the lyrics, thank yous and everything... looking at the group or live shots just imagining how awesome they were live was the absolute best feeling. It was like touching my first boob in 7th grade. I just want to always make sure that my music is packaged in a way that someone somewhere is getting that feeling passed down to them.

Duvel, a Belgian brewery, is weepworthy. It's a Belgian golden strong ale. I think it's 9% alc by volume? It's one of the damn finest beers you'll find. Basically any Belgian beer.

It's been a while since I've had it, but Punk IPA by Brewdog (from Scotland) is very good, and they make several other beers that have a really good reputation, including a kick-ass Imperial IPA called Hardcore IPA. I mean, with names like those, how bad can they be?

Also, Delirium Tremens. Trust me.

And Trey, the University of Vermont is just such a wonderful place. Beer, nature, the quality of life there was just great. I miss living in Burlington a lot.




I just had perhaps the most intense moment of my career so far: I was providing sideline med coverage for a high school football game. Game's going great, nothing major, until one play everyone takes a knee because one of our guys is facedown, legs out straight, arms straight to his side. Not moving.

I SPRINT out there and take a knee next to him to talk to him. I'm totally ready to spineboard this kid. Our team physician is with me ready to help.

The player blurts out "BOTH MY LEGS ARE CRAMPING." and flops himself over on his back so we can try to get him up and off the field.

I've spineboarded a few people before, just for precautionary reasons. But that 10 seconds to get out to him before he said he was cramping scared the shit out of me.
