It's funny all the people with different ideas here, but I love being in bands. I do the playing every instrument thing because I couldn't just not write and record, but the best times in my life have been playing in bands. Not knowing what someone else in gonna play next is wonderful, and having every member's personality shine through sounds way better to me than my personality x5. :idk:

It's real interesting to read about you guys starting playing later in life though, I think that's awesome! I started aged 12 or 13 and I dunno what I would have done in my life if I didn't play music.

This is also my feels on it. I think it's important to have guys that can contribute, but I would not want to be a band dictator. our colaborative efforts are always greater than what one of us would come up with. I think of it as more flavors.

i'd love to find other people to play with, but as i age the chances of doing that in a context that isn't a classic-rock or country cover band is progressively more remote. i don't think anyone else my age even listens to MBV.

Yeah I get that. My dad has the same thing (don't mean to sound disparaging or anything, I think my dad is really cool) where he only gets to play with lame covers bands and acoustic stuff but he LOVES noise and hard rock.

I live in Silverlake and have an enclosed balcony facing the Hollywood sign. I can see the Scientology building from here. I'm looking at it right now....

I think you'd be suprised how many older dudes feel EXACTLY the way you do. I know it's a different scene out here but there are a lot of silverbacks bringing the metal and even the younger crowd digs it. Pretty fucking cool actually. Go find your people man, dont give up. they are out there wishing they knew a dude like you.

I definitely agree with this stuff
I was in a band (band is an overstatement, we had one riffed that we jammed on for about 4 hours - I was on keys) before i could even play an instrument. Then I picked up guitar and made a new band with one of the dudes a year or so later and it was super fun. I picked up bass just to play in a band because they had 2 guitarist and no bassists

I love working with other people musically and embellishing each others ideas
My last band was pretty much controlled by me, artistically at least because everyone else was too lazy to write, so I could shape the songs exactly how I wanted. But that wasn't fun, I love bouncing idea back and forth and when something clicks and you look in another persons eyes and you know you've cracked it
it's so good

TRUTH

I don't think bands should have 'leaders', writing collaboratively and blending each other's ideas to the point where you all love the way something sounds and are equally excited to play it is the best feeling.

I was poor and spent whatever small funds on school and dating. I was always embarassed to ask girls out cause I had no money. I'm lucky girls went out anyway, Goddess bless their hearts and loins.

Then work and it wasn't until I had an existential crisis that I said, fuck it all I'm gonna play guitar if it kills me. And it wasnt easy starting older because my hands are pretty untrained and my back hurts like fuck from sitting, but it would hurt anyway. It took me three years before my hands got strong fingers nimble, callouses right.

I think it's interesting that when I do actually get into it and start jamming away the thoughts disappear and so do I and I as much as don't even hear what I'm playing.

This is interesting my shit has always been electronic noise math rock. I love making drum n bass and experimental on my own by icons guitar an absolute bore by myself. I am pretty well erased at jammy and changin and working with people. For every really bad jam I've had, I'm pretty sure I've done at least a couple really amazing one.

I have a bad habit of drooling a little when I'm really focused on the guitar. So there are awkward moments in the middle of a jam when I have to clean my guitar from some stray drool. Embarrassing true story about how much I love bands.
