He does some weird acting in one of his earliest films when he was still an unknown Irish actor. It's called Disco Pigs and is weird Irish cinema at its best; kinda like the Butcher Boy.
neaaaaat. i'll look for that. i think i had Butcher Boy and never got around to watching it 'cause it wasn't subtitled? i'll have to search DVD Piles.

The Butcher Boy is mostly in English. I think there are some Irish words here and there because it was made a good few years ago and set in the 70s or 80s when Irish was more commonly spoken.
I usually avoid personal qualities regarding celebrities. Like you say, sometimes it can detract from the actual art, the thing that put them in a position for others to hear them in the first place. I do, however, like to hear when a celebrity speaks out boldly for something I or they believe in. I know it's ignorant to ignore the shit and only pay attention to the good stuff, but I guess I just don't make the time to fully realise the person behind the art.
naw. that's a healthy attitude. focusing on the positive and shit.
urp. should have been more specific. i watch a FUCK ton (metric) of movies at work, it's loud enough there that i need subtitles/captions running. so if a movie doesn't have that, i put it in the pile to watch at home, and sometimes it gets skipped.

it might sound bad, but understanding someone being racist that's from 70-80 years is easier than someone who fucks kids. it wasn't right, and it's sad all the mess that used to happen, but it was a different time.
i can't think of a time in western society where we ever condoned raping children though.

all i've seen of polanski's is the ninth gate and i fucking love it.
which gives me a weird thought, apparently it's easier for me to hate musicians & their work for their behaviour outside of it (modest mouse...) than it is people in film...
9th Gate is probably his worst (although I still own it, and enjoy it, it's definitely a bad movie). Check out Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, or if you like modern films The Ghost Writer.
I think the use of the term overrated needs some qualification behind it, especially when you're talking about movies like Citizen Kane.
oh yeah duh, i have rosemary's baby. to each their own, i thought that fucking sucked. i've seen ghost writer too, didn't know that was his, wasn't one i'd watch more than once either.
they're just about the most hypocritical sellouts i've ever heard of. used to bitch & moan like mad about the industry then realized, "oh, shit, we could write some ridiculously radio friendly crap and make way more money than we have been."
