I could see myself picking one of these up and tuning it bari style B-b/A-a prior to hitting that octave down from Spanish Tuning E.

30" scale length may be a bit uncomfy for chording. 27" might be a little more appropriate.

I guess,...since I have two basses (a 4 and a 5 string) I wonder if a Bass VI is justifiable since what I'm trying to accomplish are lower tunings guitar and matching octave down tunings on bass.

It's a unique instrument for sure and sort of an in-betweener. I play mine like a guitar AND bass but I think it leans more towards a bass in feel, tone, and response honestly.

The tight string spacing and 30" scale set it apart from most everything and while it can be easily be played like a guitar, I don't think it'll substitute for one full time. You can get some super heavy guitar riffage going but it's limited in terms of clarity and punch with the heavy string chording IMO, a bit "lifeless" sometimes as kosta mentioned and mine's only tuned down to D standard. Single note runs crush with fuzz/dirt involved but if you're looking for a down tuned guitar sound to pair with a bass you're already happy with, then a baritone may be closer to what you're after. If you're looking for a guitar sound that's super heavy and hard to tell apart from a bass, then you'll be happy with a Bass VI. Think Jucifer. That's the type of guitar tones they'll dish out. :thumb:

As for amps, I've had excellent results running it through bass or guitar heads. Alternate between an Ampeg Micro head and dual 2x10s for bass setup and Ampeg V4 or bass spec'd Dwarvenaut 20 with 2x10s and a 1x15 for guitar setups.

Yea, I don't intend to downtune on the hardware end (if I want to do that, and I very rarely do, I'm already plotting to put a synth pickup on it and using it with the Vguitar shit).

Sadly, while I have cash in hand, the Sam Ash dude I spoke with after going up the chain of command says mid-September on the black ones, mid-Oct on the Oly Whites and bursts.

Holy Schnikes wrote:^ This is good advice. Bass VI string options were already in short supply long before the introduction of a $350 Squier.

LaBella finally saw the marketing light and created separate ordering pages for custom Bass VI sets in both nickel plated rounds and stainless steel rounds. They also have a standard set of flats available. You can get them here, click on the set you're interested in and design it from there for around $20-25.

I've been doing some experimenting and landed on the perfect set for mine (25-36-46-62-82-106) tuned to D standard. Finally got rid of that sloppy low end feel, nice and balanced now with perfect medium tension. :thumb:

I could kiss you right now. my 12 string tuned in 5ths down to B will become a reality

I'M SO CONFUSED INSIDE. It plays great and it sounds pretty good through bass and guitar amps, frequency-wise it sits right where I like it, chords sound weird with it, and I can't afford it right now. I do have to sell some things before my move, though... So.... maybe.

KSM. The guy who's in charge of doing the ordering there told me he put in an order the day fender first started taking orders. He only ordered one, though, and apparently he automatically put it on hold for me without telling me. Super nice of him, but the more I think about it, I just can't afford it right now. I'll have to check in tomorrow and let them know...

Talked to them, they had one they were willing to part with.

Thanks a ton, I'm literally 200 miles north so it's as close to a local business as I can get.

Arrived about 30m ago.

Holy mother of Christ.

I went straight for the fuzzes, nothing fancy.

VI > Fender Blender > Space Echo.

I am ready to be one step away from a Throbbing Gristle tribute band.

Will report more later with samples used in a not-nice way.
