Help me: trascendental GAS Guitar vs Modular ?

Post by MPrado »

Hi friends, i would like to known about your opinion.
I´m an young artist, my current work is noise (more and more conceptual oriented), and experimental music.

I'm basically formed as a guitarist, but i really love modular synthesis. Since i play music, i was changing all the time my instruments. I don´t have a solid job, so i don´t have enough money to have both equipments (guitar and my eurorack). i´m a bit tired of sell stuff and then regret it, over and over again.

"I hear that you have sold your guitars and bought a modular system.
I hear that you have sold your modular and bought a new guitar."
:bang: :bang: :bang:

I'm usually a pretty pragmatic person, I buy the equipment I need for x recording, and then i sell them, or whatever and move to the next step...

nowadays i have a semifull 6u eurorack with make noise modules... but
i´m thinking a lot in playing guitar again....

I even made a long list of albums that have influenced me deeply, (where guitar albums are goalscorers ), and the classic pro-contra lists....

anyhow,i think i should focus for a time in one thing and i don´t known how to do it...

i really appreciate your opinion on this

If you're not absolutely sure, maybe an option would be to sell a minimal amount of gear and pick up a cheap but decent guitar like a Squier VM or something.
For me at least, as far as guitar playing goes, I know I'm passionate about it if I can happily make do with a cheap guitar and minimal amps/pedals, but modulars aren't exactly something that you can exploit to their full potential on a really tight budget.

I get where you're coming from, a couple of years ago I was learning tenor saxophone and really wanted to seriously get into it but couldn't nearly afford a decent sax without pretty much giving up on my guitar rig completely. Part of me wonders whether I should have switched, but at the end of the day if you're passionate about music I'm sure you can find sounds that you want in any number of instruments until the day comes when you can afford EVERYTHING.

I hope that was somewhat helpful.

It seems to me that if noise/experimental is your focus, then why not keep your modular synth and buy one of those modules that allows you to patch external audio into your modular and boom your guitar can be processed by your modular. Also you could maybe get one of those modules that does guitar-to-CV conversion eventually and then use your guitar as an oscillator.
Decently good guitars can be had cheap, Squire for example.
