I get the potential for volume but it's certainly not automatically included. I mean I was at the Serial Hawk and Weedeater show the other night. Will had a V4 on top of one 6x12 and Scheidt's old plexi clone on top of the other. Sheppard's Marshall stack was louder. So from my perspective, why bother?

And I've run this line into the ground so I won't spend much time on it but I'm pretty much against having cabs built. How many trees must be felled so I can turn up the same 12" speakers that everybody else does. I say (I know broken record) that if you want a dog, go to the pound. If you want a cab go to the craig's list.

I hope you won't think I'm trying to force dogma. I'm not! My thoughts are for me but I like to share :animal:

Were guitars going through the house? Was Weedeater headlining? It's a venues sound guys prerogative to make the headlining band louder and sound better, unless you bring your own. Everytime I've seen weedeater Dixie was always louder then shep. :idk:

I think the reason could be that Will runs Swamp Thang speakers(150w each) and Sheppard probably sticks with 30-50w Celestions.

Swamp thangs have an incredibly high sensitivity rating which means they should be perceived as louder with the same wattage amp at the same settings.

I get why you asked those questions Skip and we both know they have obvious answers. This might be weird but whenever I can I stand against the stage and lean in so I get as much amp and as little house as possible. I want to hear shit as raw as possible not through the billion dollar stereo. I know Will's mission and know from a fairly close perspective why he's doing what he's doing with specific gear to further that. Our current bands played our second show together back when SH was a two piece. I've watched his rig morph into what it is now and the bottom line here is really that he's happy. It's not like I tell him to lay off the 6x12's and wise up and do it my way or any kind of jerky dogmatic shit. He sounds great and I'm always up front at a Serial Hawk show because I love it.

BUT, I still don't get it. Seems impractical.

I gotcha brother, I wanted to believe you were a stage leaner as most gearheads are! I know it can seem impractical, but theres always so many variables. For me I wanted the most speakers I could power with one amp for playing live. With my Dunwich I power 6x12's and 3x15's when if I went with normal cabs I'd be limited to 2 4x12's or a 4x12 + 2x15. Theres also the visual appeal of big cabs on stage, which unfortunately stage appeal is something you have to consider. I've seen some of the most amazing bands play insanely tight sets and get near no applause and nobody paid any attention to them because they were not very loud and stood very still while they played, while I've seen the opposite; really shitty bands with horrible tone that go absolutely nuts on stage with huge stacks and people were shitting bricks over them. There's never an always right answer when it comes to gear. I wish I had the same mentality as you when it came to cabs, my wallet would be alot happier

BTW Serial Hawk has become one of my fav new bands that i found out about this year. SUCH GOOD SHIT! I envy your ability to see them on a constant basis.

You're dead on point with the want a dog go to the pound, want a cab go to craigs list thing. The only reason I'm doing a custom cab thing is that I want something wierd and different that isn't reasliy available anywhere. Up to this point all my cabs were craigslist scores and none of them cost more than $200. I'd be lieing if I said the look wasn't a factor. I want amphenge behind me when we play
It is also a bit easier from a practical standpoint to use one larger cab than 2 4x12's. It's definately not "practical" to use a full stack in the kind of venues we are likely to be in but I think we're all far beyond whats "practical" allready.

D is def a stage leaner  Every show I've seen him at he is as far front as possible and I'm pretty sure he would be on the stage itself if that was allowed :animal:

Red Fang had that problem after Black Breath. BB plays stacks of Marshall cabs with a pair of Peavey heads (Butchers? VTMs?) atop each and are just crazy bombastic running around on stage and getting animated. Then came RF with these little half stacks you couldn't even see from the back of the room. They mostly stood in one place and even though THEY FUCKING NAILED IT, the overall effect still fell short. Which was a surprise but hay I gotta be honest.

Yeah Serial Hawk is pretty goddamn great! Last I knew they were between drummers but rumor has it that there are at least three (with cars!) sniffin around so hopefully that gets sorted PRONTO

There are so many times where I'd like to get right up to some guys' cabs while they play with stage energy. Yob springs instantly to mind. That dude has an uncommon sound and feel to say the least.

You might wanna catch these guys live one day then, they invite everyone brave enough up on stage for the last song to stand and/or sit/ and/or lay in front of the cabs.

I know he uses 6 bottom ported 4x12s(built himself) then like 8 other vintage cabs, like sunn and orange stuff, and I think I saw 6 heads in their latest video....

Yeah following BB is not fair to say the least
Man drummer searching sucks. I'm so glad we got Ryder on board. The stretch between Zak leaving and getting Ryder I now refer to as the Dark Times.

Back to the topic at hand, I'd def be into that monolith if it was cheaper.

Beast in the field sounds like my kind of peoples :thumb:

These Beast In The Field people seem pretty radical. I love both the songs that were recently posted in the DR thread and this live one is you just posted is also killer.

Yeah man, its crazy how much visual appeal actually plays into live shows. I wish it was all about the music but alas thats far from reality. Having a good frontman is key, good thing Ancient Warlocks has that on lockdown.

Damnit, i need to move up there.... That would give me a reason to get back behind the kit and get back into shape!!! I can't play grindcore anymore but I'm sure i could still lay down the pounding on something as heavy as Serial Hawk.

Totally, I asked him if he was willing to take any less and all he said was "it's built like a tank and thats what I paid a piece for each Atlas"

Also, although I know it should definitely not affect price, the previous owner was Mike Scheidt.

yeah, that's cool man. I'm sure it is well built and rad, (why i even looked at it) but it's kinda like D was saying, CL abounds with cheap cabs and I tend to be a bargain shopper when it comes to that. I hope he gets his money out of the sale. It does look really cool and If I didnt have one in the works I might be more interested.

Man I wish CL was like that in my area :( all we get are Marshall 1960, MG100DFX, Peavey, Mesa, Bugera and B-52 cabs here...which are all overpriced.

When something good does come up, its usually slightly cheaper than you could find elsewhere since there isn't a huge market for that here...but as such its usually gone within hours of posting, and usually only happens once in a year.

So in my situation ordering cabs is the only practical way I can amass my wall of doom...closest places with healthy gear trade scenes would add an extra 100 at the least in gas. It's times like these I wish my family had stayed in Long Beach...
