Although I see why folks love the Custom 100, when I played an original for a few days I barely touch it. It was too much amp for my small shed. Things were falling over, I couldn't hear myself think, and it didn't react to pedals in the same way my Fryette does. It was weird. I'm sure with some tweaking I could get it right, but it was too much of a blunt weapon for me. Like I said, I totally get why it's so loved (I think it would awesome on bass), but on guitar it was a fucking beast. Drier and fatter and louder and more obtuse than any Matamp I've tried, including the GT120.

Unfortunately this is no custom  It's not as fat but it is dry and loud as balls for 50 watts. I really like how it interacts with pedals, its got alot more crunch then I'm used to but it lacks the billowing low end thats part of my signature sound. Hence why I want to mod it for a lil more low end. I have a feeling though that this amp will cut through a dense band mix like its nothing, which is what I really like about it, plus its considerably lighter then my 200w heads.

Only problem is now I have irrational GAS to get a matching 4x12..... Why did I have to check out the pics of Stephen O'Malley at the Tectonics fest..... :picard:

Hiwatt 4x12's are pretty common. 2x12's, now that's something you'll have trouble finding. I don't even know if they ever built them.

Skip, did you see my thread on my Dunwich? I'd love to hear your input.

I did, I didn't want to to entice more weed wizard comments. I was kinda waiting for it to die down and people to give up on that so we could get down to real business. I gotta step out for a minute but when i get back I'll hop on over there. :thumb:

Ancient Astronaught wrote:Thanks bud! Nick's gonna walk me through some additional mods to add some more low end to the amp, its got beastly mids and highs but its lacking in the lows department. Maybe I'm just spoiled though due to my custom 6550 and kt88 amps.

Before you go modding it, have you thought about just running a set of 6ca7s in it? I thought My 2204 was a little lacking in the low end dept compared to my Soldano so I put a pair of EH 6ca7s in it and it made a difference.

I pondered it slightly but I really liked the the spank and cut of the Mullard EL34's that are in there now, the design has some restrictive caps in it currently. Since I'm itching to get some iron time I was thinking of trying that first as it definitely wouldn't hurt opening up the frequency range of the amp, if that still doesn't satisfy I will definitely be looking into different power tubes. Thanks for the advice though!!!

Yo D! Man, I have not been around here much- this goddamn forum moves too fuckin fast for my old eyes. Infinite Flux was great on Saturday (nice to meet you guys!), Deathbed Confessions reminded me why I love crossover metal, and McCoy's was awash in old school Oly pals from way back. great night.

I'm not using the ape blaster with Mahnhammer currently, though it'll be going with me when we hit Rancho de la Luna in a few weeks and will likely get on some tracks. I think Mico de Noche might be dead, btw. who knows?

Say it isn't so! D's been saying Mico de Noche was a must see for a while.
Cool as hell to meet you guys and get to listen to killer bands. This was actually the first time we went on first and it was nice to get to actually enjoy the other bands without worrying about our set.
I gotta say I'm more than a little jealous of your recording plans. I'll definitely be looking forward to hearing the result!

Edit:
also wanted to ask-
Covers! We want to do a couple more. Not to be a cover band, but just to change shit up and have fun with it. My idea is "add it up" by the violent femmes but done with our style on it. Fuzzed out heavy riffage instead of whiny vocs and clean guitars. (Not trippin on that band, just sayin)
So whats some off the normal road cool songs from any genre that might kick some ass done with downtuned Fuzzerfuckered guitars and bass and kinda just yelling the vocs? We dont want to do anything from bands that are currently still doing it. Older shits cool.

ive been tryin to convert totos africa
from a zillion piece song
played by good musicians
into something one horrible guitar player can handle
we have a crappy recording of it from back when
but i wanna be able to get the heyboard licks down too
the main riff sounds so dope all heavy like
how bout beds are burnin
i always thought there was a chugmonster in there
add it up would be cool as hell

Just saw Weedeater for the, uh, 3rd, 4th, or 5th time. I dunno, seen them several times, and they always kill. But honestly? Them + Travis from Whores. = BEST THEY HAVE SOUNDED. GodDAMN.

Plus, they played "Monkey Junction" and that song is the heaviest arrangement of the blues scale that humanity will ever produce. Six notes. Apocalyptic heaviness.

Awesome.

My .02 on covers: work up shit that people will know, but that isn't necessarily expected.

Galaxicon covers/has covered: Sleep (most obvious, but we have lots of black metal/d-beat stuff, so it's not SUPER obvious), ZZ Top "Jesus Just Left Chicago", and (up next) Sabbath "Paranoid" (half speed with 1/4 speed drums, so, you know, not super obvious) or Rush's "Working Man" (super slow) and, later, John Prine "Illegal Smile"

New band hasn't figured out what to do yet, but thinking something semi-uptempo (since all our shit is crazy slow) like 80s thrash or Venom's "Black Metal"
