I completely agree with you on the DMMTT550. It's so versatile and easy to useTristan wrote:I don't want to hijack the topic but the DMM 550TT is probably the ultimate delay for me, it can do so much and feels so natural doing so, rhythmic delays, clouds of feedback, gorgeous modulation, power ranger mode, tweakable infinite feedback on the footswitch, full expression control, tap tempo with lots of divisions (even quarter note triplets which is my favourite), it's pretty amazing.
Those Malekko's seem nice too though, I hope you can get the 616 Dark to work the way you want it to.
I'm still curious whether anyone has thoughts on the 616 Dark versus the 616 LoFi.

Thanks for your description, that springy ringmod type thing I like.
It's the only sound I can't really get my DMM 550TT to do though it does overclocking, combined with my Hexe Bitcrusher III I can get some of those sounds and more though.
wfs1234:
Oh, it's a difficult one indeed if you can't keep them both, good luck to you!

If you have the buffered bypass circuit on and the LED goes out when you engage the effect, the pedal is working correctly.

Re: NPD!! Malekko 616 Dark
SO very helpful to have these comparisons...wfs1234 wrote:
Maybe, I need more time to decide. They both are great delays, but they do behave kinda differently. The 616D is definitely a 616. On shorter decay settings they're verrrry similar. I kinda get what was said earlier about the 600D having more analog eccentricities, but I wouldn't describe it that way. It's like comparing a broken photocopier, the 616D, to a manic depressive copying a photo by hand, the 600D.
The photocopier will take the image and, regardless of setting, will make a nearly perfect copy that's slightly darker. If you keep feeding the copies into the input, eventually the page will turn black. Ergo, on short decay settings you get some sweetly darkening delay sounds, but on long decay settings everything's going to turn to an indistinguishable rhythmic pulsation. I could never get that indistinct but shifting cloud of sound from the 616D.
If you take the image from earlier and have a manic depressive copy it by hand (looking at it and drawing it). The result will be a an image slightly changed. Some harshness will have gone out of it and the colors will have a slightly darker hue. If you keep letting manic depressives copy the image, eventually you'll be left with an image that now longer looks like the original, but will have become an abstract thing. So, on short decay settings the 600D is going to sound dark and the sound will be changed slightly. The longer the decay setting the more changed the signal becomes, it can be percussive, or it can become an indistinct cloud. How the long decay setting sounds depends on the nature of the signal the 600D is fed.
Overall I'd say the 616D is better with dirt and the 600D is better with clean tones. The 600D kinda disappears if you hit it with dirt; you might hear two repeats but it's very difficult to get anything more. The 616D, however, retains a bounciness with the input and gives you something for your fuzz to interact with instead of influence/dominate. I need more time to compare, though.
I'm thinking I might keep the 616D. It does sound really really similar on shorter/more normal settings, and I'll have a delay on my board that plays nice with dirt. But the 600D just sounds and feels soooooooooooooooo much sweeter on longer decay settings; it's very soothing like being enveloped by kashmir. So
I dumped my 616 a while ago in favor of my 600B. While it came pretty close to copping the same tones, the brilliance and just plain lusciousness of the 600 couldn't be matched by the 616. I've never tried a 600D mostly b/c NOBODY EVER WANTS TO SELL ONE...wondering if this is as close as I might get at this point, at least without spending more than twice as much $$$...
I am stoked to hear it plays well with dirt (and possibly even better than the 600D), would be a pretty important aspect of any new delay for me. Might just have to add one of these to the mix.
Dammit....

Re: NPD!! Malekko 616 Dark
I expect the difference between the 616 and the 600B is basically the same kind of difference you'd find between the 616D and the 600D. The 600's should both be based on the same delay circuit with different filtering, and the 616's should all be based on the same delay with different filtering too. So each delay will have the same kind of "feel" but with different voicing for bright or dark.

Re: NPD!! Malekko 616 Dark
Makes sense (and helps me justify buying another delay, so there's that too.)
Are they expected to be Malekko-direct sales only? And a limited run?

The 616D is direct sales only I think with 1st run limited to #100, stated on the product page. Mine should be here any day, excited to compare it to my beloved 600D.
One thing I've noticed through the years regarding Malekko 600s is people prefer either the bright or dark as they're voiced sooooooooooo drastically different. Both are lush and full and gorgeous but Josh isn't messing around with those bright and dark descriptions. They're extreme.

Yeah I wondered about that, and worried a bit that it might be more dusky than I like...the 616 with the buffer off I definitely found a little dull. Makes sense though that the voicing would be significantly different.

Re: NPD!! Malekko 616 Dark
It's SUPER dark, darkest repeats I've ever heard, easily. Dusky is a really great word to describe the sound. Mine DEF sounds kinda limp and boring in TB, the buffer really brings it to life tho, gives the repeats more clarity and bounce. Where it shines for me is the sorta background wave of awesomeness it creates. Single repeats sound great and all but it's when you let those repeats stack and interact that it sounds like nothing I've ever heard. I love the oscillation too, kinda thumping/rhythmic thing going on with it and I'll ramp it up and back off via expression. Wish the exp dialed repeats down to zer, always one repeat at minimum setting, would prefer none so I could go from dry signal to insane via exp.benjuro wrote:Yeah I wondered about that, and worried a bit that it might be more dusky than I like...the 616 with the buffer off I definitely found a little dull. Like others mentioned, it loses repeats pretty quick with dirt/fuzz but I just set it for minimal repeats and it still sounds really amazing, notes sorta soar in a wash of dark verby delay, sounds vast!
The 600B is great too and I never woulda sold mine but I had a DMM reissue that I preferred just barely and I paired it with my 600D, was nice! Now I have neither and it bothers me to think about that fact. Damn it. At least I had the sense to keep the 600D.
