The Doom Room: ILF Edition

so i need a bit of advice here...i'm hoping the new amp is ok.

The amp is a Laney 120w Ironheart head running through a 120w 2x12 cab, which is know is not ideal.

the problem is, when the amp is running at "less than a watt" setting, its fine. When i move the watt knob up to say a quarter (ie 30w) i start to get a popping type noise when i switch channels on the amp...and if i take the watt knob higher the higher that popping sound gets.

Now, I'm hoping this has something to do with the cabinet, which is fine, as i plan to get different speakers to make the cab a 200w cab anyway. My question is though...can this be a problem with the amp itself, or is my diagnosis correct?

Popping could be part of the design (or lack of design). Whenever you switch between things that have the possibility of DC charging up on a node, it will discharge when switched, hence the popping

Depends, why dont u email Laney. They should be more specific as to the problem. If its inherent or a maintenance issue.

our other guitar player just picked up a late 70's yamaha sg 1500. it's so fucking awesome. really cool guitar. i actually found it for sale and pointed it out to him. he's been looking for a yamaha sg for quite a while. someone refinished it along the way. it's natural wood with a satin finish. pretty well done actually and the guitar looks good, but as a result it was a really good price. he's super stoked. we had practice the other night with it for the first time. we now have dueling cool vintage japanese guitars.

Yes he could have made me a 2xKT88 but that amp is my end all be all dream amp. I'm getting my full 200 watts. I realize that 200 watts live for me right now is completely insane, hence the reason of my recent purchase.

In the end dude its all about tone, sure Joe Doom random guitar player extraordinaire could have 400 watts on stage but people remember the tone hopefully pleasantly, volume is too much they usually remember negatively. Your in a good spot dude.

And I needed that clean output power for the big cabs.

I getcha. I'm similar in that I want to make sure all the features I've ever wanted are in the amp. If I'm going to order a custom amp then it's going to be chocka-block full of tweakable shit.

Sweet. There is a red SG1500 on eBay that's been there for a while teasing me. It would be too near my Ibanez AR100, though, to warrant it.

Otherwise just contact Laney or the a dealer you know stocks and regularly sells an Ironheart that will be friendly enough to talk with you on it.

sweet man...SG's are awesome...I played an SG1000 a few years ago...and it has to be one of the best guitars i have ever played.

On the amp popping sound...tonight i tried it again, this time i used the Rhythm channel as my clean and switched between Rhythm and Lead channels, and there is no popping...the popping only occurs between Clean and Lead. So anyway, its fine, as i don't use the 3rd channel anyway...but in any case i emailed Laney; I guess i'll wait for their response.

I know the mesa mark V pops when you switch channels, Some amps just do that. I dont think its hurting anything, but email wont hurt either!
