On the subject or oranges, I'm watching some terribly generic pop band with some awesome gear. The bass player has an or120 (so they do exist....) through an Ampeg 4x10 and still sounds boring as batshit.
Why the fuck does every band think they can write commercial jingles and expect to pass it off as music? i feel like I'm in an Audi commercial. Although this place is packed out with middle aged wankers, so the demographic is right.
I'm at work for the record.
Whiskey, drink a few for me bud.

I'm gonna have to go back and play catch up in the morning and check all the rad shit you've been up to, just poppin in to say we played our first show tonight and it ruled. I did the normal first show fuckups and forgot to put the bar on the trem on my main (first song intro features a dive) But we got through the set and about two songs in I had a bunch o people in my face and flashbulbs going off constantly and a mad response from the crowd at the end of each song.
We'll fix the minor issues we had and be better next time, but it felt great, had a TON of positive feedback and I'm still riding the good feels.
BIG thanks to Darren for coming out (and for grabbing my trem bar out of the case) I really fucking dig Ancient Warlocks and it was sweet to have him at our first show.
D, I'm gonna hit ya up for constructive criticism tomorrow. Shit went good, esp for a first outing but I know we can always make it better.
I can't wait for our next show now.

Which one would you guys choose? I'm open to other suggestions as well, but it has to be from Sweetwater since I had a gift card I had to use!
I would never buy a Gibson without trying one beforehand. They're QC is borderline terrible. The Guild is something I've been pining for for months since seeing it unveiled at NAMM, but I'll be waiting on reviews before putting down any money. I want to make sure it's the real thing.

This is awesome and I wish you guys would put a band together, even if its just to record stuff and make demo's. Killer playing and sounds

thats a bummer man, sounded like you like that thing.
I don't know how much experiance you've had with strats and tremolos so ignore this if it's not helpful, but there are a few things you can do setup wise to make a strat more tuning friendly.
The easiest is to not float the bridge, just loosen the strings, take the back plate off and tighten up those springs. You may have to adjust the bridge height depending on where it was so your action is optimal. this alleviates the whole issue of a string going flat because you tuned another one up.
I've found that the over under method of stringing through the tuners is a great way of locking the string in place. this is helpful if the issue is strings going out due to tremolo use. Like this-

Lastly, if you do want the bridge to float so you can have both up and down action with the trem, when tuning tune the first strings sharp of where you want to end up and then decrease the amount of sharp as you tune each string. retune again starting from the same first string and go a little less sharp this time until you get it dialed in. With some practice you'll get the hang of how far to go past the note to make it end up closer to where you need to be. this makes the whole balancing act go faster. Alternately if all the strings are sharp, tune the first strings extra flat and go from there.
Again, disregard if you are already down with this stuff. I started out with a strat and love em and it kinda bugs me when players give up on them because of the trem issues, kinda the same thing with floyd rose equipped gits. I use a 12 string with a tremolo, played a 40-50 minute set last night and did not have to retune during it. So you can make it work for you with just a bit of extra effort/technique.
No matter what you do I hope you find the guitar that makes you smile and (Whiskey face avatar) ever time you pick it up.

How do you do the over under stringing technique exactly? Is it easy enough to explain in writing?

Hell yeah dude, glad the show went well! I wish I could have stopped by after we played, it would have been perfect, especially since Darrwn was there, but this drive is long. We're still in the fucking van and we left right after the show last night, got another 6 hours to go. Hopefully I'll catch you guys next time I'm up this way.

don't see the downsides of a kahler, some people whine about the loss of sustain though.
I think thats the only trem I haven't used. Its a locking system right? Any preference to that over a floyd? I used to be a floyd rose fanatic till I got into the 12 string thing. If they made a 12 string version I'd be using it.
AngryGoldfish wrote:How do you do the over under stringing technique exactly? Is it easy enough to explain in writing?
I'll give it a shot, apologies if I fail at making it clear enough.
Basically most folks put the string through the hole in the tuner and then wind the rest of the slack on underneath where the excess string length sticks out. For most hardtails this is adequate as the only stress put on the string is from bends and aggressive pick attack. On a trem equipped guitar you can de-tension the string or radically tighten it which can loosen the wind around the tuner post causing the guitar to go out of tune.
With the over under thing, you are using the string that is wound around the post to clamp down on that excess bit and keep it from moving through the hole in the tuning peg.
Basically you put the string through the hole without it being so slack that you will have to do a bunch of winding around the peg to reach pitch, you don't want to many extra winds as these can also loosen up.
As you turn the tuner to sharpen the pitch, when you get to the point where the excess will cross over the string that sounds the note, GO OVER IT ON THE FIRST PASS ONLY.
Continue winding and on the second pass go under the excess string so that the winds around the tuning peg clamp down on the bit that sticks out.
Continue to tune to pitch as normal, in a perfect world only one more time around tops, but thats not totally essential.
I'm also a fan of locking tuners but this method works for me just about as well, is cheaper and if you resell the guitar, the tuners still say Fender on them
Another good trick is some graphite in the nut slots, can be done with a pencil although I found some graphite oil at a hardware store that is slick as shit and easy to apply. it just helps keep the string from binding in the nut which can also get you out of tune in a hurry. Ensuring that the nut slots are the correct size for the strings you use also helps a lot. Especially for you guys that downtune and use extremely thick strings this can be a major factor.
If anybody's ever in my area, feel free to come by and I'll gladly do a setup, show you the tricks I know, and show off the DOOM RIGS OF STUPID BIGNESS.
Also if anybody has anything to add to this or other tricks that work for them I'd love to hear it. getting learned is a good.
