The way Brent explains each riff is how I imagine cross genre music to work. Not where every band covers multiple genres, but pulls ideas from all sorts of media, visual art, movies, etc. I think another good example is to look at the change in style between Earth's albums Pentastar: In the Style of Demons and HEX. They develop from fuzzy, riffy drone to something that could be the backdrop for a western movie or something. Essentially, I hear slow cowboy music.
But then again, I am one of those weird artist types; I wrote a paper on how elephant shit and large inconvenient installations are considered art...
