The year was 1983. Chico, Paulie, Abe and myself had been riding high on Disco but that wave had crashed. The cocaine, bright lights, afros and platform shoes had to go. We tried to add some new wave pazazz to the group but Abe and Chico weren't the best keys players and Paulie hated electric drums, he said they were just off beat. It was time for me to leave New York. So I did something I still regret to this day, kind of...I stole all the equipment from the band room and bought a Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer and a TB-303 Bass Line synthesizer, as well as a Korg Poly-61 and took off to Chicago, I knew it was my destiny. I couldn't shake the allure of dance music. I knew from my disco days that a steady beat was needed to keep people on the floor, simple 4/4 timing, so I thought four on the floor, that steady kick drum banging from the 808 is magic. In order to tie those together, a high hat on the and of the beat was the perfect counterpoint to the kick. I worked with that quirky 303 and found these perfectly elastic bass lines that could weave around that steady beat. Some minimal vocals and chord stabs from the Poly-61 and I had found my formula. Frankie Knuckles gave me a shot one night at the Warehouse, and boy, did I get the crowd moving. People were just crazy about it. This one Latino guy asked me what I called my music, I never even thought about it, I just said House Music.

Not a fan of splitting $47.33 five ways?

 but yeah, small bands are awesome. I'd love to be in a band with me on bass/synth/noise and a drummer doing synth/noise, too. Or a third dedicated synth/noise member.

I don't have anything to contribute to this thread
