when i was in college and we were reading Shakespeare in English 1B, i had a day where i totally got assimilated into the form and EVERYTHING that came out of my mouth was in rhymed couplets in iambic pentameter. it was one of the silliest things i've ever experienced.

I have a minor in English...in spite of that, I have never been able to fully appreciate most poetry. In the same way that I don't get most jazz, I don't get most poetry.

to make a weird analogy, poetry is kind of like dance...often the form (or in modern times the deliberate eschewal of form) becomes as important or more important than the content. that's why something like Shelley's "Ozymandias" stands out so...the content is so perfectly expressed through the form. it's really tough to master creating both form AND content...few popular musicians who play their own material ever command their instruments with the expertise of a great classical musician, and few great classical players can compose.

The problem with poetry usually comes from the people who try to be poets.

I do understand the form part, but my major is in journalism and we were taught to tell the story concisely ("...just the facts, ma'am..."). Given that, the poetic form is about as other as you can get. I minored in English 'cause it was an easy A for me.

But that's the point of poetry, too. In fact, poetry demands much more concise effort than journalism.

It's all playing with language, you're just emphasizing different bits.
