Joyo Voodoo Octave low volume
A friend of mine has just received a brand new Joyo Voodoo Octave. He says it's really quiet, below unity when maxed. Is this normal, or did he get a faulty unit?

Just watched a couple of demo vids on youtube and I'd say your buddy has a defective unit.

I've got one and it sometimes seems like that. I think it depends on where it is in the chain and what other pedals it's interacting with.

I see. Is there a mod to make it louder?

if you want me to walk you through it step by step, you can start by posting pictures of the board, footswitch, and jacks. if you can get photos of both sides of the board that would also help. chances are good that you can change one resistor to make it louder but if you can't, you can still add parts to the output signal that will make it louder. this mod is %100 possible. the only thing left to do is do it.

More info rom the owner: the pedal hisses, but when octave is engaged hiss level drops considerably. The board says Made in 2010, could it be one of those pre-revision circuits? Again, thanks very much for doing this.

Re: Joyo Voodoo Octave low volume
this is the emitter resistor for the last transistor in a foxx tone machine. default value is 1.5K. if you want to increase the gain you can decrease this resistor. you can remove it and replace it with a smaller value like 470 Ohms. or you can solder it to the bottom of the board and leave the 1.5k in place. the lazy way gets you 1.5k + 470R in parallel = 357R. this should be a really simple mod. let me know how it goes.

Re: Joyo Voodoo Octave low volume
Just to clarify quickly: by "increase the gain" you mean the pedal should be louder after the mod?

Re: Joyo Voodoo Octave low volume
yes. you still have a volume knob to turn it down if it gets too loud for you after the mod.

Re: Joyo Voodoo Octave low volume
We've just swapped the resistor and the pedal rips now! However, there's a loud pop when the octave switch is engaged that wasn't there before. Did we screw something up?
